Newcastle Agree To $71M Deal For Forest Winger Anthony Elanga

Newcastle United have agreed a $70.7 million deal with Nottingham Forest for winger Anthony Elanga. The Sweden international is set to undergo a medical in the next 48 hours before joining his new teammates.

The deal consists of an initial £52 million fee plus bonuses that are considered difficult to reach. Personal terms are in place on a five-year contract for the 23-year-old winger.

Elanga joined Forest from Manchester United in July 2023 and has made 82 appearances since. He played in all 38 Premier League games last season, registering six goals and 11 assists as Forest finished seventh and qualified for the Conference League.

The Athletic reported on July 3 that Newcastle were pushing to secure Elanga\'s signature with a new offer worth more than £50 million plus bonuses. Forest had previously rejected a lower bid worth £45 million for the winger in June.

Champions League Opportunity

Elanga would be able to compete in the Champions League should he join Newcastle, who finished fifth last season. The move represents a statement of intent for the Tyneside club as they seek to strengthen their squad and retain star forward Alexander Isak.

The winger already has a relationship with Isak through the Sweden national team. Elanga has made 22 appearances for Sweden since his debut in 2022, with his most recent outing coming in a 90-minute performance against Hungary in June.

Manchester United are due a significant sell-on fee from the transfer. Newcastle previously showed interest in Elanga last summer and were willing to pay around £45 million in 2024, including a potential swap deal involving Miguel Almiron.
