Borussia Dortmund midfielder Gio Reyna is considering a return to Major League Soccer, with LAFC leading the race for his signature. The 22-year-old American international seeks career rejuvenation after injury problems and limited playing time at the German club, according to Ruhr Nachrichten.
Reyna joined Dortmund in 2019 at age 16 and initially played a pivotal role, helping the club win the DFB-Pokal during the 2020-21 season. However, constant injury issues and a failed loan spell at Nottingham Forest have hampered his development.
The midfielder saw minimal action during Dortmund\'s recent Club World Cup campaign, playing just 12 minutes in the final group stage match against Ulsan HD. Dortmund was eliminated by Real Madrid in the quarterfinals, with Reyna spending most of the tournament on the bench.
LAFC manager Steve Cherundolo will step down after the season concludes, but his connection to the Reyna family could prove significant. Cherundolo was teammates with Gio\'s father, Claudio, on the U.S. men\'s national team during their playing careers.
Landing Reyna would represent a major coup for LAFC as they chase their first MLS Cup since 2022. The club currently sits in sixth place in the Western Conference standings.
Reyna\'s Club World Cup participation forced him to miss recent U.S. men\'s national team duty. Due to injuries and availability issues, he has made just one USMNT appearance since the 2024 Copa America.
The midfielder has never appeared in an MLS game but developed through the New York City FC academy system. His potential return would bring significant star power to Major League Soccer.
