Bayer Leverkusen named Kasper Hjulmand as head coach on Monday following Erik ten Hag\'s dismissal just two games into the Bundesliga season.
Hjulmand signed a contract through 2027 to replace ten Hag, who was fired after a poor start to the campaign. The Danish coach brings extensive experience from his tenure with Denmark\'s national team.
The 52-year-old previously managed Denmark to the Euro 2020 semifinals and World Cup qualification in 2022. Hjulmand also spent one season in the Bundesliga with Mainz 05 during 2014-15.
Leverkusen managing director of sport Simon Rolfes praised the appointment in an official statement. He emphasized Hjulmand\'s proven tactical methods and familiarity with the club.
\"His training methods are well known to us at the club and Kasper also knows our club very well from the last few years,\" Rolfes said.
Hjulmand expressed enthusiasm about joining the ambitious Bundesliga club. He highlighted Leverkusen\'s strong structure and management as key factors in his decision.
\"It\'s an honour to be entrusted with a team like this. After outstanding successes in the past, I am now very motivated to help shape the future of Bayer 04 Leverkusen,\" Hjulmand stated.
The new manager faces an immediate challenge with Leverkusen seeking their first league victory of the season. His debut comes September 12 when the club hosts Eintracht Frankfurt at home.
Rolfes indicated the club expects Hjulmand to implement a \"clear and proactive style of play\" to restore Leverkusen\'s competitive edge in domestic and European competitions.
