Mario Suárez suffered a traumatic brain injury in Atlético Madrid's friendly match on Sunday against Wolfsburg.
In the 21st minute, Suárez collided with teammate, Cristian Ansaldi after both lept to challenge Ivica Olic in the air.
The 27-year-old was then transported to Wolfsburg’s training ground where he was airlifted in an emergency helicopter to a local hospital.
The club announced a short while later that the player had regained consciousness but had suffered a massive brain injury.
“Mario Suarez suffered a traumatic brain injury. He’s regained consciousness. He’s being taken to the hospital for tests."
