Pep Guardiola Admits City\'s Champions League Streak \'At Risk\'

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Dec 26, 2024 3:09 am

Pep Guardiola admits Manchester City\'s streak of 14 straight seasons in the Champions League is \"at risk\" as they continue to struggle. City have dropped to seventh in the Premier League and are four points behind Nottingham Forest in fourth.

Fifth spot could secure a Champions League berth, with Uefa rewarding two leagues with an extra place based on their clubs’ performances in all European competitions this season.

“Financial is an issue, of course it is,” Guardiola said, “but it’s not just that. Now we’re at risk, of course we are, definitely. When I said before [this could happen], people laughed. It’s presumptuous: us winning the Premier League.

“They said: ‘Ah, qualifying for the Champions League is not a big success.’ I know it [can happen], because it happens with clubs in this country. They were dominant for many years and, after many years, not qualifying for the Champions League.”

Arsenal had a 19-year run end in 2017, while Manchester United\'s 18-year run ended in 2014. Chelsea was up to 13 until 2016, while Liverpool have never gone more than six years in a row since the previous European Cup.
