Arsenal Advancing On Martin Zubimendi Deal As Real Madrid Also Pursues
Arsenal are advancing in negotiations to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi despite late interest from Real Madrid, according to sources who spoke to ESPN.
The 26-year-old Spanish international has a €60 million ($68 million) release clause in his contract, which Arsenal appear prepared to trigger to make him their first major summer signing.
Reports from Spain recently indicated that Real Madrid had made a late approach for Zubimendi, while Liverpool have also shown interest in the midfielder. However, sources tell ESPN that the Gunners are at an advanced stage in discussions and remain confident of completing the deal.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly a strong admirer of Zubimendi, with new sporting director Andrea Berta also supporting the acquisition to strengthen a midfield department that could see significant changes this summer.
The potential signing would be viewed as a significant coup for Arsenal, particularly after Liverpool\'s unsuccessful pursuit of the player last summer when Zubimendi opted to remain at Sociedad.
Arsenal\'s midfield could undergo substantial changes with Thomas Partey\'s contract expiring at the end of the season. While Arteta revealed last Friday that the club is interested in extending Partey\'s stay, sources suggest the midfielder might need to accept a pay cut to remain at the Emirates.
Italian midfielder Jorginho, 33, is also out of contract this summer and is currently sidelined with a rib injury. He has been heavily linked with a move to Brazil, with Flamengo reportedly leading the race for his signature after representatives met with both them and Palmeiras during January.
According to ESPN sources, Real Madrid\'s interest in Zubimendi could intensify if Xabi Alonso replaces Carlo Ancelotti as head coach, though uncertainty remains regarding Ancelotti\'s future.
Beyond midfield reinforcements, Arsenal are targeting multiple additions this summer, including a striker and wide forward. The club has funds available but is also open to player sales to increase their spending power, with Kieran Tierney set to join Celtic on a free transfer and Oleksandr Zinchenko among those available should suitable offers arrive.
