Gio Reyna completed a transfer to Borussia Monchengladbach from Borussia Dortmund for an initial $4.7 million fee that could rise to $8.2 million with bonuses, seeking a fresh start after four injury-plagued seasons.
The 22-year-old United States international managed just 342 Bundesliga minutes last season and totaled only 614 minutes across all competitions for Dortmund. ESPN reports that Reyna\'s limited playing time has put his 2026 World Cup prospects in jeopardy under new USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino.
Gladbach targeted Reyna as a versatile attacking option after selling Alassane Plea to PSV Eindhoven in July. The club\'s limited transfer budget made Reyna\'s multi-position capability attractive to sporting director Roland Virkus and manager Gerardo Seoane.
World Cup Aspirations at Stake
Reyna\'s stock has fallen dramatically from his early career promise when he was considered the most gifted player in the US talent pool. The attacking midfielder has missed approximately 84 competitive games due to injuries over the past four years.
\"He enjoyed a meteoric rise at BVB at the beginning of his career, culminating in the cup triumph in 2021,\" Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl said. \"Unfortunately, his development in recent seasons has not gone as we had all hoped.\"
Versatility Key to Gladbach Role
Monchengladbach plan to deploy Reyna across multiple attacking positions including both wings and central midfield. He will compete with Kevin Stöger for the number 10 role while providing alternatives to wingers Robin Hack and Franck Honorat.
Reyna will wear number 13 and reunite with USMNT teammate Joe Scally, who previously played alongside him at New York City FC\'s academy. Despite making his Bundesliga debut at 17, Reyna has totaled fewer than 4,000 league minutes throughout his career.
The transfer represents a significant markdown from Reyna\'s previous valuation, reflecting his recent struggles with injuries and inconsistent form at Dortmund since joining the club at age 16. According to Transfermarkt, Reyna\'s value was high as high as $49 million in 2021 when he was just 19.
