BMO Field expansion funding approved by city council

Toronto will invest $10 million in expanding city-owned BMO Field after council voted 39-3 Thursday in favour of the deal.

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, the city’s tenant in the facility where Toronto FC plays, will put in at least $90 million towards the $120 million expansion.

Voting against the deal were Mayor Rob Ford and Councillors Doug Ford and Mike Del Grande.

“We’re very grateful for the leadership and support of the City,” said MLSE president Tim Leiweke. “This is an important issue, not just for Toronto FC, but also the CFL, the Pan Am Games, our ability to host Winter Classics, Grey Cups, and the proposed 2026 World Cup bid for Canada.”

The CFL’s Toronto Argonauts is looking for a new home, and the BMO Field project includes lengthening the field for football. The stadium is also expected to host 2015 Pan Am Games events.

Leiweke added in a statement that MLSE will now work to obtain $10 million each from federal and provincial governments.

The mayor didn’t speak during Thursday’s council debate. He was the sole opponent when the deal was endorsed 11-1 by council’s executive committee last month.

Ford didn’t speak at executive committee either, but later told a Toronto newspaper he viewed it as “corporate welfare.”

City manager Joe Pennachetti told council Thursday morning that it was “a very good deal” in that the city will get its money back with interest over 20 years.

MLSE, in turn, gets a 10-year extension of its lease, to Dec. 31, 2037 rather than 2027.

So what do you think? Personally I think this has ruined TFC's chance of really developing into a world class team. It's also ruined are National Soccer Stadium and I bet Team Canada will now look to play elsewhere.

Team Canada plays where there is a big fan support. Toronto and Vancouver are where they sell most tickets so it would stupid for them not to.

How can expanding BMO field hurt our chances to expand the brand?

More seats = more people watching the game = more revenue

What did I miss here?

No real grass = good players not wanting to come here. It's that simple.

They will change to Hybrid Grass because the Argos will destroy the real stuff at BMO.

They currently play on grass, but will be ripping it out to welcome in the bloody Argos for 6 games a year.

Insanity.

Moving the Argos there and putting turf in is a stupid move. Hopefully TFC seat holders will complain about this thoroughly

Sadly it's basically a done deal.

The city has already approved it, so the project will move ahead. MLSE will be buying the Argos and moving them to BMO before 2017.

Might as well build a fkn Olympic racetrack around the field while they are at it too. Mlse is full of idiots who don't give a rats ass about giving tfc a stadium that's world class to call their own. Instead its a shack that can be unbolted in days and packed into trucks.

it's a shame we're giving up so much for 6 CFL games a season.... the top players won't come here and the top players will refuse to play against us in fear of playing on turf. IIRC thierry henry just sits out games when the red bulls play on turf.

going to need gilberto to do some heavy lifting this weekend with defoe out.

Yup it's on 360, but isn't that just a basic cable channel?

Going to be a tough game today, but people need to remember we still have two DP's available and we should hopefully make a game of it.

It's the back line that has me worried.

Not basic for me, they want me to pay for 360. No one I know personally even has 360 either. But then again its Just another reason to cut cable after NBA playoffs.

That's odd The Score which was always basic became 360 and that package never changed for me.

The only channel that is extra for me is Sportsnet One, and I refuse to pay for it.

Streams will be available online if you can hunt one down.
