Giovinco is one of the best MLS signings ever. Great job by Leiweke. If they can negotiate to have him here beginning of the season, even better.

Another interesting point:
We will see if the league adds a 4th DP spot, but even if they do, Toronto should explore adding another DP. We have so much allocation that we can easily pay down Gilberto's cap hit and make him a non-DP under the cap. Add a 5th guy, maybe a winger or defender as a DP and this team is dangerous.
Also, I hope they are exploring options for another striker. Gilberto/Dike/Altidore are all big guys - forwards and not neccassarlty strikers. If we can get a guy from SA to fill that striker role, it would be great. Our own Inzaghi of sorts.

I hope they focus on adding another defender or two.
That's what TFC really needs at this point.

Alright great we have our stars: Bradley, Altidore, Giovinco.
What about the rest of our roster though?
Did we retain most of our guys (minus Henry)?
Is there any substantial hope for improvement with our local guys?
Also there were quite a few injuries to our squad. Is that normal for MLS teams or was that an unusually bad year health-wise?

Re: Official Toronto FC Thread
TFC moves closer to getting it's CB partner for Caldwell:
From the sound of things at the presser, Gilberto is out. I really thought they'd buy him down with allocation, but him and Jozy do realyl play the same role. My thinking is that they will go after a traditional striker to pair with Jozy if they let go of Gilberto.
Toronto FC have been working towards the acquisition of Damien Perquis for some time now with the player seemingly interested in making the move to MLS. The big issue that has been stopping the club from getting the deal done was the fact that Real Betis were looking for a transfer fee for the player while TFC were looking to acquire him on a free transfer.
That hurdle appears to be out of the way now though with L'equipe reporting that the defender has terminated his contract with Real Betis making him free to move to a new club. The move comes after Perquis, a Polish international, found himself dropped from the lineup after signing a new deal in the summer.
Toronto FC are not the only team reportedly interested in acquiring the 31-year-old defender as L'equipe suggests that he has options in France as well as other parts of Europe. TFC do seem to be the front runner to land his signature though and a deal could be in place within the coming week.

We don't need to rush on Gilberto with Sebastian Giovinco not arriving until July.
By then the league could have four DP spots, as it's been rumoured to be adding. I wouldn't mind holding onto him for another season to make Giovinco's transition easier.

Re: Official Toronto FC Thread
If the league goes to 4 DP, could TFC potentially keep Gilberto and then use their allocation money to buy down an international defender who would normally be considered a DP?
No clue how allocation works but if they can buy down Gilberto to change his status from DP I'm hoping they they could do the same w/ another signing?

I was wondering the same thing. Hopefully Ozzy or ForeverTFC can answer!

Re: Official Toronto FC Thread
Sadly MLS rules are so murky I'm not even sure.
I think they could buy down Gilberto, but I'm not sure on a new signing. This all of course hinges on MLS adding another DP spot.
If not Gilberto will likely have to be sold outside of the league to make it worthwhile for TFC.

Re: Official Toronto FC Thread
They can buy down the contract, that's not the issue. The issue is half the owners in the MLS will run and complain to the league that it's unfair for Toronto to bend the rules this way. TFC needs to decide if that's an ownership level fight they want to get into for Gilberto.
As for a CB, it sounds like we are getting Perquis - Polish International - on a non-DP. There is precedent with buying down cap hit of new signed players not yet in the league, so I'm sure they will do that with him.
TFC is also after a Winger from the sounds of things.

Re: Official Toronto FC Thread
There was an article in Forbes today on TFC, which is an interesting read and definitely raises a valid argument:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/bobbymcmaho ... is-league/
The joke concerned young twin boys. Worried that the boys had developed extreme personalities — one was a total pessimist, the other a total optimist — their parents took them to a psychiatrist.
First the psychiatrist treated the pessimist. Trying to brighten his outlook, the psychiatrist took him to a room piled to the ceiling with brand-new toys. But instead of yelping with delight, the little boy burst into tears. “What’s the matter?” the psychiatrist asked, baffled. “Don’t you want to play with any of the toys?” “Yes,” the little boy bawled, “but if I did I’d only break them.”
Next the psychiatrist treated the optimist. Trying to dampen his out look, the psychiatrist took him to a room piled to the ceiling with horse manure.
But instead of wrinkling his nose in disgust, the optimist emitted the yelp of delight the psychiatrist had been hoping to hear from his brother, the pessimist. Then he clambered to the top of the pile, dropped to his knees, and began gleefully digging out scoop after scoop with his bare hands. “What do you think you’re doing?” the psychiatrist asked, just as baffled by the optimist as he had been by the pessimist. “With all this manure,” the little boy replied, beaming, “there must be a pony in here somewhere!”
Ladies and gentlemen, in terms of Major League Soccer there is no doubt that Toronto FC is the equivalent of that excessively optimistic little boy.

Wow. TFC got an Itlalian player in his prime playing in the biggest Italian club to come join TFC. I'm shocked. This could be a game changer for the MLS.

Just came here to post this. Serie A is in a financial mess (AC Milan just sold their team bus to save money) and Juventus is looking to perhaps save money on the remainder of Seba's contract. What a coup for TFC if they get him for the beginning of the season without paying a transfer fee.

If it does happen, it also means we have to deal with Gilberto very quickly.
Think he'll be traded within the league, or sold outside of it? I was really hoping we could hang onto him, and maybe MLS opening up a 4th DP spot will make that possible.

I think they sell Gilberto before the season regardless of when Giovinco comes. Imagine if he outplays Altidore by the time July rolls around - scores more goals and so on. There is no way you can sell Altidore, and it would become real difficult to explain to the fans why you are selling the better producer in Gilberto.
In regards to where he goes, I would think outside the MLS. He has suitors in the MLS, but I think he has enough options outside of it to make it worthwhile for TFC to recoup some costs. One concern I have is that with the way we handled Urruti, Laba, and now Gilberto, it will become very difficult for us to attract players from South America.
With all that said, I really hope we can keep Gilberto. It doesn't sound like we will though.
