Re: The Official Major League Soccer Thread
Things are heating up in MLS...
High challenge. Puncture wound. Staph infection.
Those aren’t necessarily the terms you would associate with a preseason match in the serenity of Arizona. But after Vancouver and Seattle tie 1-1 in their respective preseason opener, it was language that Sounders manager Sigi Schmid used to describe the injury suffered by his forward Mike Fucito following a “high tackle” by Vancouver’s Martín Bonjour.
Fucito called it the worst he’s ever been fouled and Schmid was worried about the injury leading to infection: "It was a little bit of a high challenge," he said. "He's also got a puncture wound there so you've got to make sure there's no infection and stuff like that because that could lead to a staph infection. We've got to be careful.”
The final disciplinary tally from the match: 10 cards, including one straight red card on Sounders draftee Jason Banton.

Re: The Official Major League Soccer Thread
seems like pre season games are always rough for MLS. Last year, SKC and RSL had a scuffle in a preseason game in Arizona where the game was just called.

The Montreal/Vancouver rivalry is heating up!
http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2 ... de-mistake
Vancouver Whitecaps forward Darren Mattocks chose to dedicate his first goal against the Montreal Impact to … the Montreal Impact.
“They didn’t choose me No. 1 [in the SuperDraft] and I showed them they made a mistake,” the Jamaican striker said after the match. “I had it in the back of my mind.”
Mattocks’s 70th minute blast which overpowered Montreal goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts was the second goal in a 3-0 blanking of Vancouver’s Canadian rivals on Friday night in the second match of the Disney Pro Soccer Classic. But it meant a lot more than your run-of-the-mill preseason goal.
Numerous experts had Mattocks going as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 SuperDraft in January, but the Montreal Impact instead chose Duke’s Andrew Wenger. Mattocks wanted to make sure he made them pay for it on Friday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
So if his blistering left-footed strike that found the roof of the net had a little extra juice on it, you can understand why.
“At the end of the day, that’s my competitive edge,” Mattocks told MLSsoccer.com. “I think I was the best player in the draft without a doubt. I mean I’m not talking about it. It’s reality. So it’s pretty good. They made a choice and went with Andrew. And that’s fine with me.”

A ton of attackers and a bunch of pylons in the back won't do much for them. They'll score lots, but also concede lots. Also, with their tendency to go front line heavy, they will see a lot of counter attacks which will expose them ever more.
But at least they're better than the Limpact

Whitecaps sign 7th striker: Maltese int'l Etienne Barbara
http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2 ... ne-barbara
The Vancouver Whitecaps clearly believe that you can never have enough forwards.
On Tuesday, manager Martin Rennie signed his squad’s seventh striker with Maltese international Etienne Barbara rejoining his former Carolina Railhawks head coach.
“I’m hoping I can do good and add some more attacking power to this club, which already has a lot of potential in offensive players,” Barbara said after Whitecaps practice on Tuesday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. “The league [season] is long. People get injured and everyone will have his chance to play.”
It has been considered a foregone conclusion that Barbara and the Whitecaps would reach an agreement ever since the Canadian side executed a trade in mid-January to acquire the rights to negotiate from the expansion Montreal Impact.
Barbara was a prolific scorer in the second tier NASL, scoring eight goals in 2010 and another 20 last year, when he earned league MVP honors under Rennie at Carolina.
“He’s a little bit like Camilo in the fact that he can dribble and take people on,” Rennie said. “He’s not just a runner, but he’s also got really good pace. … He’s a guy who can start or come off the bench and make an impact. He can play wide, he can play through the middle. He’s also good at getting behind people in wide areas. He brings a lot to the table and having an extra bit of fire power is great.”

New body is formed to manage pro refs in North America
http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2 ... th-america
This is fantastic news and I think it will really help. Some of the refs in MLS are very good, but others are extremely poor and hopefully this system will weed them out.
Fans have recently clamored for radical change in the referee structure in the USA and Canada, and on Tuesday their wish came true.
MLS, US Soccer and the Canadian Soccer Association have collaborated to form the Professional Referee Organization (PRO), to manage all referees and refereeing matters for the pro leagues in the United States and Canada.
Heading up the PRO is current English Premier League referee Peter Walton, a veteran of nearly 200 EPL matches since 2003. The 52-year-old will assume the new fulltime post of GM of the organization. His appointment starts on April 2 and he’ll be based in New York City throughout the MLS season.
The goal is simple: To set the worldwide standard for soccer refereeing.
“The overall level of MLS refereeing is good, and the creation of the Professional Referee Organization is the logical next stage of development,” said MLS commissioner Don Garber in a statement.
PRO is charged with increasing the quality and training of current referees and to develop more officials, including more full-time referees.
The new group will incorporate several of the new initiatives introduced last year – a referee command center in New York, the use of video analysis, real-time evaluations and in-stadium professional match evaluators.
