watch out, hockey. here we come

Great read, thanks for posting.

MLS will never surpass the NHL here in Canada but it has a very good shot at being equal to the NBA,MLB and CFL when it comes to viewers in the future.

The TFC/Vancouver game this past weekend was the most watched MLS game in Canadian history.

Ochocinco asked to play in MLS reserve game

Image

Wide receiver Chad Ochocinco has caught a break.

His budding soccer career, which even he admits is a long shot, has been extended to include a practice game with a Major League Soccer team.

Sporting Kansas City has asked the six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver to play in their reserve team's game on Monday against a local squad.

Ochocinco, who says he actually preferred soccer until he was persuaded to focus entirely on football after the 10th grade, began a four-day trial with the MLS team on Wednesday in part as a way to stay fit and keep busy during the NFL lockout. The Cincinnati Bengals star admitted he was rusty after so many years away from the game.

He seemed nervous and a bit out of shape on his first day but a Sporting KC spokesman said he appeared much more comfortable during his second practice.

On Monday, he can be nervous all over again: He will play the right forward position against the Kansas City Brass, a minor league team.

"This is not unusual," team spokesman Dave Borchardt said. "They like for trialists to have a chance to play in at least one game, a chance to be evaluated even further. It's the same opportunity that is given most trialists."

Will be interesting to see the highlights.

Also a reminder about the game tonight, starts at 10PM. Should be a good one, Seattle could end up in a big hole without a win tonight.

Real Salt Lake vs Galaxy is sold out and it won't be televised locally? How is the rest of this state suppose to take the MLS seriously when we cant even watch the games. Very disappointed in this one

I'm loving Wondolowski getting his goal scoring started early again. Back to back golden boots?

I would be shocked if Ochocinco had the fitness to keep up in a 90 minute game. American Football players train for short sprints and then rest for 40 seconds. I played highschool ball with some guys who did Football. They were solid players for about five minutes at a time and then they needed a lot of rest. That being said I would love to see him play because I think it would be amazing for the sport here in the states.

Watching the Seattle vs Houston game, I reckon I could get a contract to play midfield for either side. :o The possession was so poor and if someone could string 4 passes together they could get an open crack at goal.

Looks like Ochocinco is a full time reserve of SKC now

This is so awesome I'm an honorary member of #SportingKC and can train with the reserve team as long as I want. Totally awesome #ILuvKC

To me this is beneficial to all parties. MLS needs all the publicity it can get and what better way than to have a popular athlete from the #1 sport in the US to have a go at a spot on one of the clubs. With the NFL lockout looming it looks like he has some free time, whether he's just trying to grab attention or not, who knows but at least he's being a good sport about it and a good coach's pupil.

Chad has shown he has some technique and certainly has some speed although his ball skills are a bit suspect. But overall he's not terrible. Whether MLS commissioner may have forced the hand of the KC coach to let him be on the squad who knows. Nonetheless, good for him. I've often wondered if we'd ever see another true two-sport professional athlete in the US. I mean for real. Playing on MLS reserve squad barely counts.

Chad has shown he has technique? LOL he's pathetic. Did you see the video from ESPN.com with him in that scrimmage? He looked like...well...somebody that hadn't played since he was in 10th grade. Which he hasn't. He's fast and that's about it.

I agree with this. If there truly is no NFL next year, Ochocinco in the MLS could be a big deal. I could see some fans of the NFL become fans of the MLS. Whatever it takes for the MLS to continue to grow and go in the right direction.

With no NFL I could see a ton and I mean a ton of MLS games being picked up by the major networks.

I bet MLS would even move some games to Sunday to accommodate them. Would be a smart move.

I don't know if the MLS will get a "ton" of NFL fans. I could see some coming, especially if Ochocinco keeps going. American football fans are often very prideful of their sport. I personally love both but most football guys assume soccer is for girls only.
ESPN needs to do a better job of pumping the sport. They advertised the world cup and got a lot of people interested. They miss huge opportunities with the sport though. I didn't see anything about the Argentian - US game which would have been easy advertisement with the best player in the world and the prep for Gold Cup. I also think their are plenty of MLS games featuring US international players that should be advertised as such. ESPN only cares about games they show but they don't understand that pumping soccer now will bring more fans for the WC too.

Oh I agree they won't gain a ton of actual NFL fans, but they will gain some and they will have a huge opportunity to grow the sport if the NFL takes the year off.

MLS highlights will be everywhere and every game will become available to a much wider audience. During the last NFL lockout NBC picked up CFL football, so yeah they were desperate.

Well, hockey is already on the downswing. And if NFL and/or NBA have lockouts, it will only help the MLS.

I don't think Ocho can play a pass on first touch from what I saw in the practice game videos.
