RAPIDS SIGN DRAFT PICK BADJI

Forward Dominique Badji started four of the Colorado Rapids' last five preseason games, but the fourth-round SuperDraft pick was not officially signed until Wednesday, when the Rapids announced his contract.

A four-year contributor at Boston University, Badji was named America East Rookie of the Year in 2011 and produced eight goals and four assists as a senior. He appeared in six games and scored one goal for the PDL team Real Boston Rams in 2014. After appearing at the adidas MLS Player Combine, he was selected by the Rapids with the 45th overall pick in the SuperDraft.

Born in Dakar, Senegal, Badji speaks four languages (English, French, Wolof and Joloa; his father was a translator and now teaches French in Zimbabwe) and came to the US with a former Peace Corps volunteer, Clotilde Coly, who became his guardian. Badji played basketball and participated in track and field at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, keeping in touch with his father via email.

Colorado Rapids acquire attacker Shkëlzen Gashi as Designated Player

Colorado Rapids announced today that the club has acquired attacker Shkëlzen Gashi from FC Basel as a Designated Player. The Albanian international will be added to the roster upon receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and his P1 Visa.

“Shkëlzen was our top attacking target this offseason,” said Paul Bravo, Technical Director and VP of Soccer Operations. “He has proven to be a prolific goalscorer in his club’s domestic and European success. In addition he has been instrumental in his national team’s qualification campaign for Euro 2016. We are delighted to sign him on a permanent transfer and look forward to seeing him in burgundy.”

Gashi, 27, joins Major League Soccer from FC Basel of the Swiss Super League, where he scored 25 goals since his arrival to the club prior to the 2014 season. Gashi has earned Swiss Super League Golden Boot honors in his last two seasons after scoring 19 goals for Grasshopper Club Zürich in 2013-14 and 22 goals for FC Basel in 2014-15. In 2014, he earned Axpo Player of the Year accolades, awarded to the best player in the Swiss Super League.

Gashi made his professional debut in 2006 with FC Zürich of the Swiss League and, following two loan stints with FC Schaffhausen and AC Bellinzona, joined Neuchâtel Xamax in 2010. While with Neuchâtel, Gashi appeared in 13 games (1 goal) and a total of 41 games (22 goals) with FC Aarau in 2011-12.

During his two years at Grasshoppers, Gashi saw action in 60 matches while scoring 24 goals for the club. He was a regular for a side that appeared in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round as well as the UEFA Europa League. He was in the Basel side that held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at Anfield in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in 2014-15, and which narrowly lost at home to a Cristiano Ronaldo goal in the contest with Real Madrid.

Born in Zurich, Gashi made 21 appearances for the Switzerland U17, U19 and U21 squads, notching eight goals. In 2013, Gashi earned his senior team debut for the Albanian national team after receiving his citizenship on August 18.

Colorado Rapids acquire Jermaine Jones in trade with New England Revolution

Image

Jermaine Jones has finally found a home for the 2016 MLS season.

After a lengthy period of uncertainty, the US international has landed with the Colorado Rapids in a sign-and-trade deal with the New England Revolution, it was announced Friday. In exchange, the Revolution have received Colorado’s natural first-round draft pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft and general allocation money.

The deal marks an end to the offseason saga that saw Jones fail to come to terms on a deal for a third season in New England. He’ll be required to serve a six-game suspension with the Rapids for making contact with referee Mark Geiger during New England’s playoff lost last year to D.C. United.

Yet despite his club uncertainty, Jones has maintained a prominent role with the USMNT, earning his 57th and 58th caps after starting in their last two friendlies against Iceland and Canada earlier this year.

Jones joins a club in transition following their last-place finish in the Western Conference last season. This winter, Pablo Mastroeni's side has parted ways with 15 players from the 2015 roster and brought in a number of new faces in the midfield, including former Sounders playmaker Marco Pappa and former Union youngster Zach Pfeffer.

I would assume a lot of people do. It's likely the most popular sport in the world... But yeah, what do I know?
