Clubs from the Great White North rising up MLS standings

Oh, Canada

What a week for the Great White North.

As the eyes of the soccer world turn to Canada with the start of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, Canada's three MLS teams decided to get in on the excitement by winning away from home. Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver all secured three points on the road against high-quality teams. TFC took down D.C. United in Washington, Montreal downed Crew SC in Ohio and Vancouver beat the champion Galaxy at the StubHub Center.

The natural place to start is with Toronto's 2-1 win over United. The match proved again, that until further notice, Sebastian Giovinco is the best player in Major League Soccer. TFC's little big man dominated proceedings at RFK Stadium, scoring two Goal of the Week-level tallies to give his team the win. Toronto took three points off the East's first-place team on the road and did it without Michael Bradley, who was away on international duty with the United States. After so much consternation on Lake Ontario, TFC is suddenly sitting in third place in the East, with the second-best points-per-game in the conference.

In Columbus, Montreal utilized their dangerous counter-attacking game to down Columbus 2-1 at MAPFRE Stadium. A bit of confusion at the back for Crew SC allowed Maxim Tissot to open the scoring before Andres Romero finished a two-man break to ice the game in the 79th minute. The Impact win means they now have four victories in their last five matches -- several of them against top teams -- making them the hottest team in the league. Quietly, Frank Klopas' team is slowly climbing up the Eastern Conference standings while still holding several games in hand on everyone in front of them. The win in Columbus shows the Impact can get it done on the road as well as at home. That's two wins in four days for Montreal, after they beat Vancouver on Wednesday night.

And how about Vancouver? Fresh off the loss in Montreal, the Whitecaps traveled down the coast to take on the Galaxy in Los Angeles, where they used their own blazing counter to take down Robbie Keane & Co. 1-0 on a goal from Kekuta Manneh. A turnover in midfield turned into a blistering shot past Jaime Penedo in the blink of an eye as Vancouver again showed off their unique collection of young, speedy talent. On the other end, the Whitecaps stifled a Galaxy attack that still lacked bite, even with Keane making his first start since April. Vancouver, thanks to Seattle's loss in Kansas City, pulled themselves back into a tie for first in the West.

MLS Power Rankings, Week 14:

1. Image Seems the consensus is that the Sounders deserve a mulligan after going on the road without three starters and holding Sporting to a late PK. We're certain this won't provoke any comments section furor.

Last Week: Lost at Sporting KC, 1-0
Last Five: W-D-W-W-L
This Week: Saturday vs. Dallas (10 pm; MLS LIVE)

2. Image Sporting average 0.5 goals per game against Seattle. Against the rest of the league, they average 1.75 goals per game. Certainly, Krisztian Nemeth was missed, but KC found a way regardless.

Last Week: Won vs. Seattle, 1-0
Last Five: D-W-D-W-W
Next MLS Game: June 21 at Real Salt Lake (10 pm; FOX Sports 1/FOX Deportes/FOX Sports GO)

3. Image Statement game of the weekend. Thanks to the formation change and the progress of young defenders Eriq Zavaleta and Ashtone Morgan, TFC look like the best team in the East.

Last Week: Won at D.C. United, 2-1
Last Five: L-D-W-W-W
Next MLS Game: Saturday vs. NYCFC (7 pm; MLS LIVE)

4. Image Indisputably a different team when Fabian Espindola is 100 percent healthy. It'll be interesting to see how much time he gets this weekend on the (hot) rug in Florida.

Last Week: Won vs. Chicago, 3-1; Lost vs. Toronto, 2-1
Last Five: D-L-W-W-L
This Week: Sunday at Orlando City (7 pm; FOX Sports 1/FOX Deportes/FOX Sports GO)

5. Image Followed up a good performance but a bad result in Montreal with their smartest, best defensive performance of the year at LA. Still not truly clicking, but they don't really need to be to get results.

Last Week: Lost at Montreal, 2-1; Won at LA, 1-0
Last Five: L-L-W-L-W
Next MLS Game: June 20 at New York (7 pm; TSN2/MLS LIVE)

Rumors are going around that Yura Movsisyan is in the US for medical. RSL have his rights but it could either mean a great upgrade at our "stacked" ST position or a big pay day.

He also posted a TBT on his facebook in a RSL jersey. This is getting interesting

Still waiting. His agent did come out and say that he was in US for vacation and the medical stuff was all just a rumor.

Major League Soccer needs to move to a single table.

Houston with 20 points in sitting 9th in the West, they would be 3rd in the East.

I'm all for moving to a single table with a 16 team MLS playoff at the end of the season.

L.A. has been on fire lately.

That's a lot of goals over two games.

L.A gets what L.A wants. MLS has changed the rules for them in the past and will do so again to get this deal done.

MLS will be adding a "core player" spot which will basically be a 4th DP spot.

As a Toronto fan, I don't mind this as we're sure to fill the spot. Although it still irks me that we had to let go of Laba, when everyone knows damn well if LA was faced with the same predicament, the league would have made it work.

Why does Toronto have so many games in hand? What happened to their schedule?

GDS to LA, Chicharo to Orlando. Getting some quality players in the league that are not on the wrong side of 30 is huge. I am all in for it

We had a lighter start to our season due to stadium renovations. Lots of road games but spread out.

TFC will have the same next season when we get our roof and prepare for the Argos to destroy our stadium.
