2016 Major League Soccer Discussion Thread (Champions: Seattle Sounders FC)

Here we go again! Portland will try to defend their title in 2016, and over all I think we are in for the most exciting MLS season ever.

Odd after so many years of expansion, that Major League Soccer will not be adding a team in 2016. We'll have to wait another year for both. L.A.F.C. and Atlanta United to join.

Any predictions for 2016 in MLS?

Lots of talent headed from MLS to Liga MX this offseason...

Jorge Villafana(26) from Portland to Santos Laguna
Omar Gonzalez(27) from LAG to Pachuca
Luis Gil(22) from Real Salt Lake to Queretaro
Juninho(26) from LAG to Tijuana

Gil was out of contract and not playing well with us, but looks like the Galaxy are cleaning house.

Seeing all of the league's team logos next to each other like that really drives home how bad the Revolution's is.

It needs to be changed badly.

The Houston Dynamo have traded their captain, Brad Davis, to Kansas City. He had been with the Dynamo since the club was founded and has been the team captain since 2012.

Looks like Houston is in full rebuild mode.

Adding

Sebastian Saucedo (18) from Real Salt Lake to Veracruz

Saucedo going out on an 18 month loan. Great move if it stays just that...a loan

I think that must mean MLS is getting better. We must be catching up with other leagues with so many players being lured away. Now we just have to up the salary cap to keep them.

It's draft day if anyone cares.

Personally I hope MLS gets rid of the draft. It's a pointless exercise at this point for the league. Most draftees don't make it, and the few that do should already be in MLS academies.

So with preseason starting.... who looks like the team to beat this season?

Galaxy, Red Bulls co-favorites to win 2016 MLS Cup, Timbers 3rd

The Los Angeles Galaxy and New York Red Bulls have been installed as the co-favorites to claim the 2016 MLS Cup in opening betting odds released by the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook on Saturday. The Portland Timbers, who are the reigning champions, come in at third on the list, offering 6-to-1 odds.

On the West Coast, a new-look Galaxy squad will feature Nigel de Jong, Ashley Cole, Jelle Van Damme, and Dan Kennedy; all of whom were brought in by Bruce Arena to compliment the likes of Robbie Keane, Steven Gerrard, and Giovani dos Santos. In other words, it should come as no surprise that the Californian club is listed as a co-favorite to win the MLS Cup, and above a Timbers squad that has experienced an exodus in December.

On the East Coast, the Red Bulls are beyond prepared for life without Matt Miazga, as the club from Harrison, New Jersey acquired Gideon Baah, who will be something of a direct replacement and will join a phenomenal defensive core that includes Ronald Zubar, Karl Ouimette, and Damien Perrinelle.

I'll take 30-1. What are the odds of me finding a casino that does MLS betting?

Roundtable: 2016 MLS predictions

Who will win MLS Cup?

GRANT WAHL: Toronto FC. MLS’s most underachieving team will finally turn it around in 2016, mainly because it finally has some guys who can defend. Clint Irwin in goal and Drew Moor in the central defense should help bring some stability to a group that has been overly attack-heavy with the formidable Sebastian Giovinco, Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley.

BRIAN STRAUS: Time to end what is by far the league’s longest trophy drought. It’s been 18 years since FC Dallas claimed a major honor (the U.S. Open Cup), but the club’s trajectory suggests that funk ends in 2016. Coach Oscar Pareja’s group finished atop a loaded West last season and then earned valuable playoff seasoning on a run to the conference finals.

LIVIU BIRD: It feels like the LA Galaxy are really built with a focus on winning right now. It's hard to see any other reason for bringing in so many, shall we say, experienced players nearing the end of their careers.

ALEXANDER ABNOS: FC Dallas. Pareja’s side has standout individuals like Diaz and Castillo to go with a solid back line, balanced midfield, and experience winning big games in big moments in the playoffs.
