Note about Gambling

Post#1 » by bwgood77 » Fri Jan 26, 2024 7:26 pm

As gambling continues to become more prevalent, I know there is a possibility it can become something that can become addicting, and I have personally gotten too far into it myself at times and know others who got in way too deep, so I wanted to just put a note here to make sure people gamble responsibly, but if you find yourself ever not having joy winning but getting depressed losing, or if you just feel you are too far over your head. I know often people can win, but sometimes many think that will inevitably continue, so they go double or nothing, or increase amounts, or if they lose, try to win it back (and this can really snowball). Ultimately, if you do it too much, over time, the odds are that you come out on the losing end, so I encourage those who gamble to do only gamble amounts they would be ok losing.

If you ever need support, feel free to reach out to me, or if you'd like to visit another forum for help and stories of others, you can go here: https://www.gamblingtherapy.org/forum/

Very classy note. Gambling can be fun but also dangerous. Folks should not feel ashamed to ask for help!

Make it about fun more than anything else. The moment you start treating it as a "business" that's when it starts adding.

Don't bet more than what you can lose is always a good advice.

For example, your budget for food this week is $100. Now if you want to bet on the Super Bowl and join the fun, bet $50 and just go on a diet :D

I only bet a few bucks on games. I love sports and I don't want to be thinking about my bets more than the game. It's fun trying to figure out the bets to make. I do mostly football and spend time analyzing it. Sometimes I bet other sports but basketball and baseball are really crapshoots.

It helps that in WI you have to place your bets at the casino. No app to bet from home. Saves me from spur of the moment dumb bets, I have to drive about 8 miles
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Yes that's what online has over the casino in person betting, you just have hundreds to bet on and you will at a certain point-- for the fun of it.

That's not innately bad if it's just fun $50 bets.

Just a question:

Was online betting or sports betting illegal In the states up until recently? What actually has changed recently?

Here's a timeline from The Washington Post:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/08/29/history-of-sports-gambling/

So yeah "fairly recently" is apt for legalized gambling in the States.

(Of course, underderground, it's always been there since sports was invented :D)
