Weird how many people want into a league that's supposedly dead in the water. Don't ya think?
^Add Philly to that list. The Sixers proposal for a new arena included a pitch for a WNBA sister franchise that would share the building and resources.
Yeah it's weird that a "failing league" has both cities and NBA teams scrambling to get in on the action. I'm sure that there are business analysts that have way more information than we do informing these entities before these bids are submitted, so I think the lesson here is to ignore the haters because they don't know any more than we do.
Ultimately I think the league needs to pair WNBA and NBA teams up. It cuts down on the overhead and it will address a lot of CBA concerns in terms of player amenities. The Sun shouldn't be sharing their practice facilities with a local youth club or whatever happened.
The Sun need to be paired with the Celtics and the Sky needs to be paired with the Bulls. That sell out in the TD Garden wasn't a fluke.
The truth is decent owners don't look at the hard books. They concern themselves with market shares. As market shares go up, the values go up which is where real profit lies. The Celtics technically lost 18 million last year on paper, the Wolves are set to lose like 80 million on purpose. That's not where real money is made on these franchises. TV deals, Viewership, Market product sales, attendance numbers... These are all more important than the year over figures because so long as those go up, which they certainly are, the value of the franchises skyrocket.
That's why everybody's trying to get in. This is the lowest value the WNBA is gonna be for the foreseeable future. There's a fortune to be made if you can get in now and hold the franchise for 20 years.
Good point.
Even on the annual profit, there's reason to be skeptical.
I don't know the truth. Neither does anybody else.
Only the League/Owners.
So, it would seem that anybody reporting on league profitability is either making it up, or being fed information from the owners, which may or may not be true.
There's a big labor negotiation coming up. Rule #1 in labor negotiations is convince everybody that you aren't making money.
Again, I don't know. Very few people do. But I'm certainly not going to take the media's word for it.
