Weird how many people want into a league that's supposedly dead in the water. Don't ya think?

^Add Philly to that list. The Sixers proposal for a new arena included a pitch for a WNBA sister franchise that would share the building and resources.

Yeah it's weird that a "failing league" has both cities and NBA teams scrambling to get in on the action. I'm sure that there are business analysts that have way more information than we do informing these entities before these bids are submitted, so I think the lesson here is to ignore the haters because they don't know any more than we do.

Ultimately I think the league needs to pair WNBA and NBA teams up. It cuts down on the overhead and it will address a lot of CBA concerns in terms of player amenities. The Sun shouldn't be sharing their practice facilities with a local youth club or whatever happened.

The Sun need to be paired with the Celtics and the Sky needs to be paired with the Bulls. That sell out in the TD Garden wasn't a fluke.

Miami would be the best location for a WNBA team. Let's give the Heat a sister club :)

I’d even take an Orlando team. I want to watch Phee in person at least once without having to take a plane

The truth is decent owners don't look at the hard books. They concern themselves with market shares. As market shares go up, the values go up which is where real profit lies. The Celtics technically lost 18 million last year on paper, the Wolves are set to lose like 80 million on purpose. That's not where real money is made on these franchises. TV deals, Viewership, Market product sales, attendance numbers... These are all more important than the year over figures because so long as those go up, which they certainly are, the value of the franchises skyrocket.

That's why everybody's trying to get in. This is the lowest value the WNBA is gonna be for the foreseeable future. There's a fortune to be made if you can get in now and hold the franchise for 20 years.
They're not Democrats. They don't want you to agree with them. They want to force you to pretend to agree with them.

That's communism.

I'm definitely buying tix for the big rematch next year between Minnesota and NY  i gotta see Phee up close and personal

That sounded weird. But you get what I mean, she is a flat out superstar and I think next year she will be the 1A of the league.

Right, you make a fantastic point.

Imagine being apart of an investment group that wins the bid to own a team or buys a current team that needs to relocate (CT). Fast forward to 2044. Your initial investment probably means you're walking away with more money than you'll know what to do with

We should form an ownership group here on Real GM  I'm sure we can all pool together enough to acquire a .0001% stake

the liberty owners bought the team in 2019 for a song, $10-15m - now it's worth like $130m
that's the kind of return everyone wants to get it on
like with all investing the best time to get in was ten years ago but the second best time is today
hopefully the league doesn't completely cave in to all the demand and over-expand and end up with 30 teams by 2030

We don't need to overdo expansion i agree. Let things grow organically. Too much too soon might not be a good thing.

With as much money as the Liberty brought to NYC the past two months I want to see the valuation now.

Bulls and Sky ain't happening. Reinsdorf is way too cheap.

The Sky are getting a new practice facility though soon, and it's less than 2 miles from my house! If I'm understanding correctly, they're not taking over the current sports complex, they're building an addition on it which will be the Sky's practice center.

Nice! Let's hope that Sky ownership takes this moment to really step up their operations. The Free agent scramble is going to be crazy and teams with the most to offer players will be getting the pick of the litter

Good point.

Even on the annual profit, there's reason to be skeptical.

I don't know the truth. Neither does anybody else.
Only the League/Owners.

So, it would seem that anybody reporting on league profitability is either making it up, or being fed information from the owners, which may or may not be true.

There's a big labor negotiation coming up. Rule #1 in labor negotiations is convince everybody that you aren't making money.

Again, I don't know. Very few people do. But I'm certainly not going to take the media's word for it.

the league is underwater right now but presumably a couple individual teams are making money (liberty and aces would be my guesses)

wonder how close other teams are close to profitability

I know a WNBA finance guy. The teams lost money this year, for real. But of course that was under the old TV contract and as has been written, the league's value lies with its increasing eyeballs, not its current profitability.

Return to WNBA
