WNBA Board Projects Thread

Hey y'all!

So, something I'd done on a number of boards in the past, but primarily on the PC Board, is run projects within the community.

On the PC Board you can see the Projects thread that penbeast created to see some of what was done over there.

I'm creating this thread for discussion about projects we might want to run, as well as a place to sticky links to old projects eventually.

I'm going to start things off with something of a timeline I have in mind for WNBA projects. This isn't set in stone - it depends on what people are interested in - but I think something like this could work well.

1st, an All-Season Awards project which community posters will vote in at the end of the year. You can see previous winners of the PC Board NBA projects here.

What I'll do shortly, unless there's a strong objection or another idea put forward, is an Awards discussion thread which will start off as a discussion for the WNBA's official regular season awards, and then will continue with the playoffs from there.

2nd, after we vote for awards, if we seem to have a decent quorum invested, we can do a Retro POY project, where we go through past years and I decide who we as a community impressed the most. Know that the All-Season awards of the PC Board come out of the Retro POY project which we did in 2010.

My plan would be to run this forward from the first year of the WNBA in 1997 and culminating in 2023.

3rd, once we've actually had a community of folks go through and make sure they're aware of the history of the W, it probably makes sense to do a Top X project along the lines of the Top 100 projects we run periodically on the PC Board.

I will say though that I'll want to strongly consider taking a break after the Retro POY project, and that one possibility then would be to wait until the end of the next WNBA season before trying another major project (like a Top X).

Just wanted to give an update here.

So we ran our first board project with the 2024 POY, and can claim that under our belt. That's good!

On the "one to grow on" front, it felt like most of the posters didn't really feel comfortable voting, which led me to back off a bit in trying to get a more ambitious historical project going that would require explicit votes.

Something I have in my mind at this time is to go through and make a thread for every year in WNBA history where we can just talk about what happened and share highlights without the pressure of committing to votes. Of course, that's a lot of threads so maybe that's a bit much, but I do feel like the board at a certain point is going to want to do more discussion of WNBA history.

If others have thoughts about projects that the board seems ripe for, please do post here.

since most people here are likely to be fairly new to the wnba and not familiar with it's history, an educational series looking back at the history of the league would probably be a good idea

maybe not a year-by-year, rather broader topics that allow people to ease in
