been a fan of the W since the beginning. i was in high school during the inaugural season. die hard liberty fan through all eras.
i often tell a story of how when i was a HS player we sometimes practiced at basketball city. it wasn't uncommon for pros to also workout there. one such pro was teresa weatherspoon, who invited ALL SMOKE at ALL TIMES. usually the only woman in the gym and by far the best guard on the floor.
i've been lucky enough to get mopped by D1 men and overseas pros, but i'm still traumatized by the t-spoon spankings. so, i've never been one to take kindly to the machismo surrounding WNBA conversations.
all that said, i recognize my own positionality as a man... even "one of the good ones" and how much i've short-changed these women over the years. so it's a joy to be part of communities like this and to watch what these heroes are doing right now. it's an example for all sports and extends to other areas of justice.
i'd love to see more robust conversations. MDB has been a leader and driving force on the knicks forum and i want to also be part of the change i want to see.
most importantly, the W has always been great basketball and big fun. but i am also loving the wholeness these women are finally getting to bring to the public spotlight.
hi, everyone. i promise i won't be a stranger.
