Simply kids are more athletic these days and do some dunking after their 500 3pt shots when practice came to an end.

To be honest I can’t see any of our boys (not even Papas) exceeding their current level of competition. Only Jankovic, with some assistance from his Serbian protectors, my play some day in the NBA. The rest of our boys are to slow and have reached their peak in development.

This of course is my personal opinion. I’m just sick of watching Greek kids stopping their hard work once they reach the A1. They think they have conquered the world before the age of 20!

It’s not only me that has this opinion. Coach Lefteris Kakiousis said in an interview this morning on “tablo kai mesa” on ERA radio that Diamantidis has become the best grek player today because he was blessed NOT to play on the greek national team when he was young (even though he was a bench warmer for a while but that is another long story). He claimed that kids bump into cash, glory, fame and women so early that they cant focus on their development! For the record, I didn’t hear coach K’s voice but it was the reporter brought forward their discussion.

Honestly guys, have you seen Schortsianitis at RnB parties in Athens? It’s only he and his brother with 10 chicks in tight shorts dancing at his table! I thought it was Tony Montanas table when I walked by and saw so many bodyguards!

Well, I started from elsewhere and ended up…. no where!

Good luck boys with the states!

KWSN-Men this is exactly what i mean about the Greek talent. No superstar quality players. Fozzy well said man. I couldnt express my self better than this

I thought you meant the next generation had no good players or hope. This next generation can be something like Croatia's senior team is now I think. As for the current generation Greek team, I think Koufos and Spanoulis and maybe even Zisis will do better with Kazlauskas as the coach. Their ability to score the basketball will actually be used now. So I think there might be more "hope" than you think.

Just a heads-up: Eurosport is broadcasting live the Universiade Final between Russia and Serbia right now. Good teams, Serbia leading 20-11.

USA just won it all. Great play on D and fast-break attacks from Team USA.

Yes, because then they would be just about the only team in the world that sends all its best players. Too bad.

I wouldn't take him very seriously. jt142 is one of those posters whose blind nationalism prevents him from doing any kind of basketball analysis, at least on the international level.

It was my first look, but I like this Pappas kid. Very crafty with a nice handle. He did a good job using his body to draw separation and fouls, despite not being able to finish the tough shots.

He seems a bit slow though and didn't appear to be able to change gears and explode. He looked very relaxed out there too, perhaps too relaxed? It was if he was disinterested at times.

Kostas Sloukas played a nice game too.

Valiant effort from my Greek boys, sucks that Sarikopoulos was hurt, may have made the difference. No shame in 2nd, as once again these boys are going to rejuvenate the senior team in due time.

I have the semi-finals and the Final in the DVR to see later.

The Universiade Final I haven't finished watching yet, but so far it's basically Shabalkin (with some help from Voronov) versus the entire Serbian team and the hostility of the crowd (which has been awesome) and the officiating crew. Shabalkin is the best player on the court from a skill-set standpoint (his post moves are tremendous), but he just disappears from the game for too long for no good reason. His guards are freezing him a bit, but I don't see him asking for the ball, especially down low, as much as he should. I don't understand his reluctance to re-post on the blocks. The Serbians are playing a very aggressive manXman defence (over-aggressive with the complicity of the officials?) and the Russians are really struggling with it. They also have a great high/low offence, with lots of guys who are long and good shooters and can play in/out. I'm particularly liking what I'm seeing from Keselj, who seems to be playing with much more confidence, but they have lots of good players.

I've played ball on both sides of the lake (N. America and Europe). What I saw from the final that eventually evolved into the main advantage of the Americans was their PERSONAL D!

I emphasize the word personal for 1 reason. Here in Europe we learn to play defence with our hands high! Coaches teach us from the age of 6 that you always keep your body low, stand on your tips and…… HANDS HIGH!

On every drive a Greek tried to make you saw an American hand trying to slap the ball out of his grasp! In Europe, up to a few years ago, refs would call every such play as a foul. Not anymore! If you notice carefully, the Greek boys at first started driving and getting the ball easily stolen, something that resulted in easy fast breaks for USA. As the game resumed, they started hugging the ball on their two steps towards the basket. That’s why Papanikolaou lost 2 easy lay-ups. You don’t have enough time to finger roll the ball as you want to.

Pappas and Sloukas seemed to have the same problem.

I don’t go to kiddy practice anymore but this I do know. We have to stop training our kids like this. Plus, refere’s in Europe have to decide if they are gonna call the play or not. At lower level play all you need to do is cry out loud and you can gain a foul.

Now that I come to think of it, it really is our fault. If fouls are called so easily on similar plays, how are we gonna teach our kids to lower their hands and try to steal on the drive?
You want answers?

The way to defend is with your hands high. Ass down, hands high! as coaches shout in practices. In fact, one thing I've been noticing is a decline in the execution of that skill, both in European and American players. You see too many young players with lazy hands these days. If you want to reach for a steal, you need to have active and quick hands.

Europeans have a problem with personal defence because individual defence isn't taught enough to our young players. Our coaches start teaching and using zones too early and kids never learn to slide, to recover an to close as well as they should - as if the athletic disadvantage wasn't already enough. While in the US you still have a majority of oldschool high-school coaches who will only use zones if their players are so slow-footed that playing zones is the only way of being competitive, in Europe pretty much everybody uses it as the default defensive system. I'm against this practice because the only purpose is to win games in youth competitions and it hurts the development of the players - and that should be the priority for developmental coaches. Kids have plenty of time to learn zones later on, they needed to be asked and taught to play man to man defence. Personally, I think FIBA Europe should forbid the use of zones in every u-17 tournament. I know some federations are already taking measures to address this issue.
