Victor Claver

Post#1 » by farzi » Thu Sep 17, 2009 3:53 pm

Hello everyone, new to this board, and didn't see a thread about him (if there is/was one please point me in the right direction).

Anyways, other than youtube highlights I have no idea how good this cat is / is supposed to be. Was hoping someone who followed him could give us Blazer fans a little insight on what's to expect from our 1st round pick in the coming years.

Thanks
Thank you for all the memories BRoy. You were a class act and brought hope to an entire region for 5 years. You will be missed.

Not very good at all. I don't know why he was even selected to Spain's roster. He's only 21 though and he has good length and excellent athleticism. So he has talent, but at the moment he's not good. He's an athletic project, which is exactly the type of player the NBA is obsessed with.

I have to disagree with you.
Claver before his serious injury, was being the best small forward in the ACB along with Pete Mickeal.

Right now, Claver is a good player but like many other youngsters, still has to improve in certain aspects of the game.

He has to be more consistent and agressive on the offensive end and i think he has some leadership problems that he will have to solve soon, but as a prospect, he is great, a player with that combination of athletism, size and coordination is a not a common thing.

He´s a very skilled guy with great ball handling ability for a player with his size and also has a pretty solid jumper.
His basketball IQ looks good ,he is a mature guy for his age but like i said before, he will have to improve in terms of confidence.

Devotion - making those bold, emphatic statements when you obviously have no clue about the game of basketball, as you amply demonstrate on the Eurobasket thread, really isn't good for your health, man. Why don't you first learn the difference between an icepick and a pick-and-roll and then come back here to explain why Claver isn't any good?

I have seen him playing since he was a child, and he is the most talented SF (Talent wise) that Spain has ever had. That said, he has serious confidence issues. He was the starting SF for Spain at the initial games, but there were many situations where he should take a shot and he would pass the ball being open.

He has all the tools to be a star in Europe, for his size he is probably one of the most athletic guys playing in Europe if not the most, can handle the ball, is very coordinate for a guy of his size. He is a good passer, great shooter... Can play some PF, but in the nba due to his lack of bulk he is a clear cut SF. Defensively, he is not a mess but has to improve a lot and be more active, can block some shots when focus on defense.

He is an all-around player. His ceiling is a more athletic, quicker version of Rashard Lewis, but that´s gonna be very complicated reach.

He was playing the best basketball of his life at the beginning of this season but then he had a hard injury on his knee and stayed out of the game for 5 months or so. He will stay in Spain for two more years at least, and that situation will do wonders for him, because he will get used to be the main guy on Pamesa Valencia.

Regarding Portland they may have drafted a SF version of Rudy Fernandez if he solves that confidence issues and keeps developing, high risk-high reward kind of situation because he may not pan out and be just a 3point threat coming from the bench in the nba.

If he pans out he is a starting SF in the NBA and a 15ppg man in the right situation.

That video sums up his skill set:

As the last post in this thread was over a month ago and the NBA season has started, I presume the season over in Europe has also begun? Any updates on Victor's progress this early into the basketball season would be appreciated.

Thanks
