PBA Fiesta Conference Finals between first-timers Air 21 Express and popular team Barangay Ginebra Kingss. Game One starts tomorrow.

I watched some of the games last summer for the tournament that determined who went in the Olympics and whatnot. I forget the players and their names, but I really enjoyed watching them. I was in the Philippines for the month of July, and I was glued towards the TV in Boracay watching those guys play. Mabuhay!

EDIT: This player is my favorite, and my brothers and uncle are Ginebra fans, so basically I'm a Ginebra fan too.

I'm curious about the PBA. One of my Filipino friends talks about it a lot. So how does it compare to other leagues? like the Chinese baksetball association for example?

Philippine basketball was the best in Asia but they followed the American basketball style too much (being a colony and all). Since American ball is all about athleticism, and the Philippines do not have much to show in that deparment they got gobbled up by more fundamental teams like China. Philippines could have been in the Olympics if not for dumb coaching. There are the favorites in FIBA Asia.

But in terms of raw street talent, the Philippines have the best players in Asia.

If China have the guards of the Philippines, or the Philippines have China's height and big men, they could give teams like Greece a run for their money.

But yeah, I agree, the Philippines seems to have lost some of their fundamentals. The outside shooting that the RP team used to have that gave teams like China and S. Korea fits on international play seems to be gone. And with the lack of size, they are just no match for the other taller teams in Asia.

Well, that's not really a fair statement to make. First of all, it's not like there are dozens of Asian players in the NBA. There's a handful of players that's made it. China has Yao, Yi, and Bateer and Wang before. All of them are at least 6'10 and taller. Iran will have their first player in the NBA this year (correct me if I'm wrong) and he's huge.

I think Sun Yue would be the first Asian guard to make an NBA roster (i don't think Tabuse made it, i believe he was a late cut before the final roster was set) and he's a 6'9 guard.

From a size stand point, the Philippines just can't compete. Sun Yue, at 6'9, would be one of the tallest player in the Philippines. I think on average if I have to guess, Filipino "centers" are around 6'6 - 6'7 in height.

No, we also have 6'3" centers.

However, we have the greatest fans. We know our college and pro hoops (local) as well as the international scene from the NBA to Euroleague to Fiba tourneys and the Olympics; in short, we love our basketball!

We have basketball courts (half court) in at least every 5 street in major cities across the entire islands!

There is. But he is a coach - Erik Spoelstra.

Will get back to you on the exact link of the streaming but there's one which i can't quite remember... For updates on the scores and news there's the official Philippine basketball pro league website (www.pba.com.ph)

There's also quite a few videos (old and new) on youtube so might as well search it.

Currently, the PBA is in its quarterfinals stage with two of the the most popular teams slugging it out in one pairing (Ginebra vs. San Miguel, sister teams actually because they share the same owners, the San Miguel Corporation) and the other match-up between Rain or Shine (that's a brand of a paint) against Sta Lucia Realtors.

From that best of three affair the winning teams pair up with a couple of teams who was automatically seeded to the best of five semis by virtue of topping the eliminations. The finals is a best of seven.

Other random notes:
+ The Spanish National Team has the San Miguel logo in their national uniform... i did not know previously that SMC was this big of a corporation anyway.
+ Besides Erik the head coach of the Miami Heat there was a Filipino in the late 70's i believe (wiki), that was a first but apparently he was at best a bench player and never really saw real playing time in the NBA.
+ American imports are the preffered reinforcement during the 2nd conference. Some of the NBA vets/Americans who did appear as "imports" are Darvin Ham (He s^cked when he was here), Scott Burrel (nice pickup but wasn't much of a scorer), Lenny Cook (injured but dominated still because he was really tall and talented), Larry Robinson (lefthanded chucker who played for the Hawks)... Some of the more successful players were the ones who never really had NBA experience (Well, the NBAers who did come aboard were either washed-up or just injured)
+ i believe Karl Malone has a Fil-am for a wife.
