OFFICIAL BASKETBALL RULES 2008:

All below-mentioned rules will come into effect as of 1st October 2008, i.e. after the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games...

I don't like the rules. They are very similar to NBA rules and it seems to me that FIBA wants to erase the difference beetwen NBA and European basketball.

yes the rules seem like fiba is becoming more like the nba everyday. but the catch is.. these rules are taking place after the beijing olympics, since they are effective October 1st 2008.

i think the new rules are great apart from one thing. If they're gonna extend the three point line there will not be enough room in the corners. they need to widen the court as well

As long as they don't introduce the charging foul circle and don't take away real zone defense, i am not that concerned.

Do you mean this?

Art. 2.2.7 No-charge semicircles

The no-charge semicircles shall be marked on the playing court, under the baskets. The distance of the inner edge of the semicircles shall be 1,25 m from the centre of the basket (on the floor).

A charging (offensive) foul should never be called if the contact by the offensive player is with the defensive player standing within the no-charge semicircle.

If they increase the size of the courts, even better. Those FIBA courts are way too small to begin with. I don't see how they could move back the 3 pt line without increasing the size of the court. You'd think the two go hand-in-hand.

These rules are lame. It will be harder to play good defense and Euroleague could turn out to be the second NBA.

Well, if you have adequate speed, quickness, and athleticism, it shouldn't be a problem. When I watch FIBA bball games, it looks like they're playing on a miniature court. There isn't enough space. It's kind of like playing indoor soccer. That's not real basketball.

Remember the major changes will start taking effect from 2010/11 season, not before. I personally think that's not a bad idea, to try and have more similar rules between FIBA and NBA. After all, it's the same game so there shouldn't be differences this big. The 3 point line sorely needed to be extended so that's a good thing, just like the NBA-style 24 seconds rules. I can't say I like the semicircle rule, or the one that will change the shape of the area, but oh well, that's the direction basketball is going...

About court dimensions: considering FIBA courts must be 28x15 m, which is roughly 92x49 feet, while an NBA court should be 94x50, and the 3-point line will be 6.75 m away from the basket, it should leave, at the very least, a 75 cm space (roughly 2'5"/2'6" -> 3' in the NBA) between the 3-point line to the sideline. Since the Euro 3-point line is differently shaped than the NBA one, that space will start to increase closer to the baseline than it does in America, where it goes parallel to the sideline for a while longer. Not denying there will be little space in the corner, but on paper it's doable to leave court dimensions as they are right now.

That's exactly why this will be a problem. Euro players just aren't as athletic as NBA players.

So you might oppose the 24-second rule as well. Because it was 30 seconds until the FIBA chose to adapt the NBA rule.

By the way, you might oppose the shotclock and the three-point-line in the first place, because those were NBA inventions which FIBA just copied.
