What are the chances Ben Gordon goes to Europe?

Post#1 » by brassviews » Tue May 5, 2009 9:27 pm

I ask this because Gordon is demanding 10-11 million a year. That's a huge problem since Gordon isn't worth that. On top of that, most teams are looking towards 2010 to use their money.

That said, would a European team be willing to pay 10-11 million for Gordon?

Well this summer CSKA offered him 5 million euros net salary. That's equivalent to about $13.5 million per season in the NBA. He didn't take it because he would still be a restricted free agent and the Bulls would still have his rights. So it would not really solve the problem for him.

However, CSKA is lowering their budget by 15% next season so that is out now. He also got an offer from Olympiacos for the same but he wasn't ever really interested in playing for Olympiacos. Considering his asking price, the style and needs of the clubs that could sign him, his traits as a player, basically the only club I think that would consider it then is Olympiacos. They would use him to upgrade over Lynn Greer. So his options basically I think would consist of just one club.

None.

Currently, no European team would make an offer close to that. I'd expect salaries in Europe to decrease by 15%/20% on average next season.

Everything is possible in this case if you ask ME, beacuse he always look for the best possible contract... But I believe he will stay in the NBA. Intuition.

Yea, like if it would be the first time that in the middle of a negotiation a player's agent claims having an insane offer from a third team that turns out to be untrue.
I doubt any european team is willing to make an offer like that in the present situation. Maybe Olympiakos if Childress decides going back to the NBA.

He's the perfect offensive NBA player to play in that Euroleague style of basketball that favors the scorer that can dominate the game from the free throw line to far beyond the 3 point line. If given a complete greenlight, Gordon will by far be the leading scorer in the Euroleague with that short 3 point line. He'd probably also break the single game scoring record. If Euro teams decided to double him on the perimeter then whatever team he plays for will win the championship. Ben Gordon is the perfect offensive scorer for the Euroleague rules.

Obviously your bias for international basketball is showing again. Navarro just won the Euroleague MVP while he plays a poorman's version of the same exact game that Ben Gordon plays. If Navarro can be the Euroleague MVP then it is guaranteed that Ben Gordon would win that same award running away.

Considering he's worried more about money, and would get the highest offer from Europe, I'd say he's the most likely current decent NBA player to make the jump overseas.

Just out of curiosity, for how long have you been following European basketball?

Well apparently Olympiacos has already made offers to Ron Artest and Ben Gordon. Base salaries are max NBA contracts and they would have additional money from part of team sponsorships as well as a bunch of other bonuses. The dreaded "inside source close to the Olympiacos owners".

I heard it in radio. So it would be maybe a day or so before it's on sports sites. I think it's probably true knowing Olympiacos ownership. But at the same time I have to wonder why they are doing this. They know there is very little chance these guys would sign. They just keep doing this stuff for publicity. But then if these guys do sign it's just like Childress you have overpaid these guys by a lot. It's just stupid.

From post #356 onwards (especially #363). Of course, knowing the Greek media, it doesn't take a scientist to know that this is a self-fulfilling prophecy: sooner or later they'll report rumours that Olympiacos have made offers to Gordon and Artest.

Wait, so you are saying this is where it originates from? Greek radio and website sports guys actually go to that forum, copy stuff posted there by members and then make it news? I thought the reports were always going around from the Lithuanian, Israeli, Greek, Spanish, and Italian sites. Rumors and stuff sure but no different than anything ESPN ever reports. It seems a bit crazy that they would just take something that people post in some random forum and make it news.

Meh... we both know the process: you made up this rumour in a couple of boards, hopefully at some point some amateur site will pick it, then some radio talk-show, sooner or later an online paper and suddenly it's in the MSM.

And yeah, of course there are lots of well-informed people in that forum, you know that as well as I do.
