as long as ball stays healthy, the offense should be fine and high tempo, Clifford well pressure them about the boards and defense.

it can manage

hope you're right, he showed me nothing last year and age/talent wise this doesn't resemble the type of roster he had success with during his last Charlotte run

a 41-41 roster dragged down by inevitable injuries and Clifford tax. 33-49.

NBA is tough to predict tbh. Usually at least 1 team is just demolished by injuries and no longer a playoff contender.

but really the Bucks, Celtics and Cavs are only 3 teams I think that are significantly better than us.
Sixers we need to see what happens with Harden. maybe them too.
Heat are great in playoffs, but regular season are usually pretty avg.

I see no reason we can't compete with Nets, Hawks, Knicks, Bulls, Raptors, Pacers, Magic etc.

It is unlikely, but the 4th or 5th seed are definitely in the reach of this team if things go well.

That said I think 39 wins is more likely given coaching, suspensions, injury history, inexperience etc.

Things we should account for

Healthy Melo
Bridges back
Miller in
Mark Williams is the 5 for sure.
Retained Washington

We have legit NBA players for once. I hope we prove it. All of those except Washington weren't on the floor last year. We have a good chance it improve.

The 30 wins under/over is a proper pisstake

I hope we get to the point where we can assume a healthy Melo but I'm definitely not there yet.

I'd definitely take the over, but not by much. There's a bunch of questions for the team this year with Melo's health, Gordo and Terry potential trades, and Miles being an unknown getting reacquainted with the team.

If we can, it's a game changer.

Miles, Ball and Rozier managed 43 wins together with Plumlee at centre. I'm hoping they can get that mojo back

Hornets in 2021-2022 offensive rating: 114.1 (9 out of 30)
defensive rating: 113.7 (23 out of 30)

Hornets is 2022-2023 offensive rating: 109.2 (30 out of 30)
defensive rating: 115.3 (20 out of 30)

Clifford took us from the 9 best offense to the worst in the league. We also went from 1st in assists as a team to 17th in assists and defense improved slightly as a result of always having a real center in the game.

Some of that was Melo being out, Miles being out, but not all of it. I wish I believed in Clifford. I know he isn't a difference maker though. At least not in a positive way.

I am still going to say 43 wins, a 5th seed and a deep playoff run though because the team is loaded with talent. Brandon Miller is going to have a role where he just has to hit open shots and he is perfectly suited for that. Nick Richards is going to win most improved player.

Agreed.

The team had basically everything go wrong last year and still scraped together 27. If you assume better injury luck with Melo that number starts going up. Even if Melo gets hurt again Miles/Miller are a big upgrade over Oubre. Mark was an upgrade over Plumlee last year, probably even more so now.

The only wild card is this: would the new regime embrace tanking? MJ never did, and Cliff never will as long as he's here. But if the team starts as slowly as last year it wouldn't totally surprise me if the new ownership did the tear down Mitch was reluctant to do last year at the deadline. That is the only way I can see us not reaching 30+ wins.

id say a huge part of it was the 2 best players being out. melo was especially cruel as it made Rozier point guard.

If Melo stays mostly intact - 45 wins
If not - 35

When LaMelo was out last year we went 14-32 (30% wins)

When LaMelo played last year we went 13-23 (36% wins)

The year before with JB we went 43-39.
