Random question for you guys living in the Asheville and Southwest mountains of NC.

Trying to plan a trip to the highlands cashiers Brevard area of NC in a couple of weeks and trying to get a sense of the roads in that area. I mean it looks like most of the roads are open on Google Maps. Hotels are obviously bumping. Almost everything in highlands is booked. What is that area look like? I know the chimney Rock Lake Lore area is still pretty much a war zone so definitely avoiding that area. Thought about going to Black Mountain but kind of rolled that out. Went to blowing rock last summer so switching it up this year.

Also what's the best drive to get to that area? Should I go 74 to 26 and then down three Brevard? Or should I take 85 and then N up through the South Carolina Mountains near Caesar's head table rock then north up to that area.

I havent been to that part of Western nc in probably 20 years. Any favorite little towns to visit or any favorite waterfalls or scenic drives or small hikes? Any hikes would need to be probably half a mile or less from the road.

I still have family tucked away west of Asheville - if you're into hiking, the AT runs through a cool little town called Hot Springs that has some good grub/beer and some easy walks along an adjacent river. My brother runs (and chefs at) a cafe/general store on the way to Hot Springs called Trust General Store - good food. Of course, there's the whole Nantahala/Lake Fontana area which is gorgeous. Reaching out to my bro about road conditions.

Thanks mpm. Let me know what your brother says . many ages ago, like early 80s, I spent a lot of time traveling to that very far western corner of NC mountains. as a kid my dad would always take us up there on the weekends. but, I haven't been to that deep in the Western NC mountains in ages. Going to college in Boone I spent so much time and that part of the northern NC mountains. other Trips to the mountains as an adult were usually to Asheville or as I mentioned about 20 years ago I did take a trip to Sapphire Valley area. But I havent been to like Nantahala, Fontana Dam, egde of smokey's hot Springs area since I was a kid. In fact I don't know if I have any specific memories of ever going to Hot Springs. It's always kind of been on my list.

Man, I love the Hot Springs area (and Hot Springs specifically) - tiny town and BFE for sure though - way out there. Funny, the same brother that's now near Hot Springs went to App - there are stories - many, many stories. I used to visit him a lot. Think one of our hangs was a place called Caribbean Cafe for wings?

I'm usually up in SW NC about once a year so been around the area a bit. Sylva is a cool little town if you're based further south from Hot Springs - closer to Fontana, etc.

Stay tuned.

EDIT/UPDATE: My brother says the roads up to and around Hot Springs are 'not bad' but you need to stay alert as there's still stray wash outs happening here and there - two primary routes from asheville are 63 and 209 - they just finished repairing the last two big wash out sections on 209 but he said minor repairs will likely be ongoing for a while as there's still sinking pavement in places. This said, he said they've had a bunch of car clubs coming through the store of late and no one's having issues. I have another brother that just took his son up to Nantahala to kayak and waiting to hear back from him.

Awesome. For the info from your brothers. If we do decide to go I'll let you know if we make it as far W as Hot Springs.

Your brothers must have been at Appalachian State in the mid-nineties. Caribbean Cafe wasn't there that long. But they had the best wings I've ever had in my life. They used to have 25 cent wings on Wednesdays I think. And like $5 pitcher beers. They had this one wing sauce called Jamaican scorching squared which was my go to.

Ha - funny - yeah, dead on. Would've been that time period. We may have been in Caribbean Cafe at the same time. My brother says, quote, "Oh hell, yeah. They’re still my favorite wings of all time I actually liked Jamaican scorching squared with a Fisher Amber."

FWIW - my other brother said zero road problems up around Nantahala. He was there pretty recently.

Downloaded one of those plant identifier apps. Evidently there are 3 trees growing in random pots on my porch. A tulip tree, a loblolly pine tree, and a red maple tree. The tulip and maple are maybe an inch tall. The loblolly is about a foot.

Maybe when they get big enough, I'll move them into the woods where all those trees got blown over. Although the trees that got KO'd were almost all loblolly pines. So maybe I'll stick the loblolly sapling somewhere that has more wind cover.

EDIT: Okay, scratch 3. There are 4-5 maples alone, they were hiding in some grass. And a "norway maple" too. I'm skeptical of the norway maple, but it's some sort of tiny tree for sure. Couldn't get the best angle on it.

Gimme about 20 years and i'll totally replant the forest at this rate.

Seems like a lot of major websites are having issues today.

https://downdetector.com

Big spike, pretty much all at the same time.
