Extremely dumb, and you might as well have added Cuban in there with the comments he came out with today with the incident. Instead of setting an example for others, he basically is saying be careful and don't do what you do around camera phones, they aren't your friends. :roll:

Well, yeah. You have to remember that a lot of NBA players get a pretty shabby education. Many have been pampered from Jr. High on up, with college (if they even attended for a few years) being little more than heavy-duty tutoring. There are obvious and delightful exceptions; many on our team seem more sophisticated than the average NBA baller (Okafor in particular)... but overall, critical thinking skills for NBA players are likely little better than for the average American. And that's pretty low. It's not surprising that silly stuff like this happens.

It's the same sort of thing that occurs with "average Joe" lottery winners. You give Average Joe $25 million and just stand back and watch the carnage. It's not pretty. Between the hangers on, the drugs and alcohol, the dangerous toys (cars, boats), the ruined relationships, the huge unnecessarily houses, the suicides, the utter mess of it all... I'm not really surprised that insanely wealthy NBA players often say or do silly or stupid things. For the most part, they are athletically gifted to an absurd degree, without much development of other faculties.

Again, there are numerous exceptions, so just stop your flaming right there. I don't want to read "but you know Foyle has a Ph.D. in XYZ." So what. I'm talking averages here. Give a ANY bunch of Americans a lot of money and power without insuring that they first have a solid education and a certain level of sophistication (RE: the media, finances, culture)... and ugly stuff is gonna happen.

We all have a right to express our opinions, but it does not mean it is wise to express certain opinions in public. Mark Cuban is not a dummy, and you know he cant be real happy right now. Howard goes out and gets in trouble with the marijuana thing, and now this. All Cuban needed was to have a group of veterans or so wanting to picket the home games alleging the team supports those views expressed by Howard since they keep him on the team. I'm not saying that would be right, and I'm not saying the Mavs should trade him. But when a person in the sporting world goes out and starts dissing the flag, national anthem, and his country, that will hit on some very raw nerves. It just was not very bright at all.

My vote is for the "granny panties" level of stupidity.

He's pathetic. Won't respect our country because "I'm black". Yeah, being black has really busted your chops hasn't it Joshie? Gives you more money than you can smoke it up, all the toys you could ever want, and yet you buy into the whole loaf that Jackson and Sharpton keep selling.

Howard's too busy blaming his country for problems our brothers are having in stead of acknowledging his and their need to take personal responsibility for their own lives and for those they are affecting.

Here's my suggestion Josh: just play "expletive" ball since that's all you know how to do worth a d***.

If he really felt that the best way to express his philosophy (whatever it is) was to "not celebrate" the national anthem I would respect him for taking a stand knowing it would hurt his image/endorsements/etc. (even if his "stand" is a little vague)

Of course he will never elaborate on this in the least and probably eventually offer a clumsy apology. It wasn't a statement, it was an easy throw-away line that meant nothing.

That said, I can't be too mad at him for this. I can't lump him in with REAL knuckleheads like Marbury, Antoine Walker, Derick Coleman, etc.

I agree with e4Nf6 (man I wish you had an easier nickname... maybe I'll just start calling you e4?). Josh Howard isn't the right guy to say it, and he didn't say it well, so in that sense it was stupid. But in principle he does have the right to express himself, and it's not as if he's saying something ignorant or without basis.

Howard is crazy smart. He wants out of Texas and what better way to do it than talk about how you like to smoke weed and hate the flag. Stay tuned next week when he wears a New York Giants jersey.

If he wants out of Texas, does he have to knock the American flag? By my count, every NBA franchise is in the USA except Toronto, so maybe he wants to go there!??!!??

I guess Toronto will be getting him cheap... if they want him at all. After all, the Canadians ARE proud of THEIR flag like we are of ours. Talk about a popular guy he's going to be now. What kind of an education are they serving up at Wake Forest nowadays? Oh, yeah, I got it! To get an education, one must have THINKING gray matter under the skull...not 20 ton P.S.I. concrete!
