Taking the last shot

Post#1 » by ccbballin » Wed Jan 21, 2009 3:19 am

When the game is on the line why does Felton turn into a black hole for the ball? I know he hit that shot against Detroit, but other than that he probably only makes about 1 for every 10 shots to either tie or win the game.

I like the attitude of give me the ball, but come on your not MJ pass the ball sometimes with less than a minute to go.

Because since he was drafted that's what LB has wanted him to do

i'll give ray credit... he has stepped up and hit some really big shots, at times when nobody else seemed to want to step up. i'll give him credit for being willing to take big shots. dude has a lot of confidence.

that being said, LB needs to make sure he calls plays to get the ball to the best person at the end of the game. i dont think ray is out there blowing LBs plays off.... and you know LB is calling plays. most likely ray has a play with a few option, one of which is keeping the ball and taking the shot himself.... problem is, ray ALWAYS keeps the ball. any team that has a half decent scouting dept will know this and start playing ray to shoot in the last 5 minutes of games. personally, i'd rather have diaw deciding a few of these end game shots.

I'd like to see Wallace get a chance to drive and score. I don't really like the idea of anyone on this team taking a long jumper. I think the bigger problem is that no one besides Ray wants to take the big shot. I obviously can't prove that but it certainly has that feel.

I think LB asks Ray to make a play so that's what he tries to do. Ray needs to realize that a good pass is also a good play.

I just don't see why we would let Ray do it. He has a bad shooting percentage during the regular flow of play, why would we think increased attention would help things? I suppose the answer is that we think Ray can get a shot off, but I'd really like a different choice.

DJ is the obvious player to do it, if he's going to struggle as a rookie with the pressure, let him keep doing it until it's routine. Hell, or dish it off to the open man, that works for me since we don't have a go-to scorer.

Everyone is problematic.

I like the idea of Crash getting the chance to drive and score or at least be fouled, but the problem is if he does that, there usually is no plan "B" so if the D adjusts for his drive, we might be in trouble.

EO50 is a suspect foul shooter so as soon as he touched it he would be fouled.

Bell is a good catch and shoot guy, but can't create for himself so if the D plays up on him he struggles - besides, I don't think the long shot is the best option.

Feltons struggles have been well documented.

I think give it to Diaw. He has range on his J, has good hands and can spin into the post. Plus, he's a pretty quick thinker so if he needs to bail out, he might make the decision to quickly enough to get someone else a look if need be.

With Wallace he basically has one move so you can gear up all 5 men to prepare for it. Ray has to because he is the only creator besides maybe Diaw. Diaw is not a bad option to take the last shot.

Only problem with giving the ball to Wallace and driving the lane is often officials will swallow their whistle basically meaning if he doesnt hit the driving lay up he wont get a call.

Yea, we've been burnt here more times than I can remember.

Edit: add to Slam's list Diaw-doesn't seem to want to take the shot in the late stretches of games much less in "clutch" situations.
