There's some incredibly ignorant **** on this thread. I was born and raised in Durham and have lived here my entire life (went to school in the mountains of NC for five years but still "lived" in Durham when I wasn't at school). Durham is a great place to live. Plenty of nightlife, things to experience, places to eat, etc. It's got an incredibly bad rap from those that really haven't spent much time in the city. Sure there are gang problems and crime in certain parts of the city but it's no different than any other city its size. In the 25 years I've lived here I've had one mild case of crime occur to me or a family member and that was roughly five years ago when our coked-out 20 year-old next-door-neighbor decided he was going to break in to every car in the neighborhood. That's it. Nothing else to me or any of my family. I've been to every "bad" part of town dozens and dozens of times and have never felt threatened.

A friend of mine was in a similar situation to the one it sounds like you're currently in. She's from upstate NY and was looking at attending Duke. She'd always been a fan of Duke Basketball but wasn't sure if Duke would be the school for her. She came down to Duke, loved it here, recently graduated, and after having her parents beg her to come back home to upstate NY, she refused and recently bought a place in the Brier Creek area because she's so in love with Durham and the area. She claims Durham as home now, not NY.

Don't listen to these clowns judging Durham off what they see on the news or the one time they passed through Braggtown. Durham is a great place to live. Plenty of stuff to do here to keep you busy and entertained. When you're bored you can drive three hours to the west and be in the mountains or two hours to the east and be at the beach.

Yeah WTF, this has mostly been a thread defending the triangle area. "Incredibly ignorant ****?"
