The Influence Of Our Leaders

Post#1 » by BigSlam » Thu Mar 4, 2010 3:45 pm

Last night was a "interesting" night for Tyrus IMO.

His stat line didn't look too bad, but there were some concerns with his application. He looked a little out of control last night. Forced the issue a little and did some silly things.

I am worried about the effect that guys like Felts, Jax and Crash will have on him. He's a young impressionable kid. I think that if he sees them moaning at the refs, he's going to do the same.

If he sees Jax getting into it with Pierce, then he's going to go out there and try and make a statement to in order to earn his team mates respect.

That worries me because Felts, Jax and Crash are HORRIBLE when it comes to concentrating on what they do and not on what the refs/other team is doing and I don't want Tyrus buying into that.

Am I over thinking this - or is a concern?

I think it's over thinking. Tyrus does have a mind of his own. The problem right now is we have no center and everyone is in a shooting slump.

It starts with defense, they need to beat teams up like they were during that one home stand. That will get guys easy baskets and raise confidence in their shot. We can't shoot 37% and expect to win allowing the other team to shoot over 50%.

Frankly, the version of Tyrus Thomas we saw initially after the trade could be viewed as an aberration. Last night he resembled the Tyrus Thomas of Chicago.

Oh, and I do agree with your overall point.

I am beyond sick of Jack and Gerald talking and not performing. Both are talking to the media, to the refs, and to opposing players - and that doesn't help you win.

One thing you guys will notice with Tyrus. He was never bashful when it comes to the refs, and expressing himself. He didn't often pick up technicals for it, but there were many, MANY times where i would not have been surprised if it had been called.

I think you guys will have an easier grasp on keeping it to a minimum though. We haven't had a whole lot of veteran presence. And alot of the veterans we have had are not the vocal type. Not so sure what type of leadership guys like Wallace etc can bring to him as obviously i'm not as familiar with your players. I think if anything though, LB will get much more respect from Tyrus than Del Negro did. And maybe that can tone it down.

I'm a Tyrus backer so i hope he does keep it under wraps with you guys, but just wanted to chime in and say that if he keeps that up. It's definitely not something that's picked up from your players. It's always been a part of him.

If TT chooses to engage in combat, it will be because he blew a lid, not because of Jax. Outside of that, I guess he might complain more if he see's Jackson, Wallace, and Felton doing it. FWIW, he had seven technical fouls last season, and he does strike me as someone who would spit fire to the officials every now and again, so honestly I don't think those guys will have much of an impact on him with regards to this.
Humble yourself.

I've had league pass 2 years straight and I just moved out Chicago last year, Tyrus game last night doesn't represent his play in Chicago. Yes, he sometimes gets a little reckless, and last night he played badly, though I did like the rebounds, it had to be the his most horrible game this season. As to the remark made by Big Slam, Tyrus does have a attitude, LB has to put that under control asap, Tyrus is young and needs a coach like him. In the game last night, Tyrus tried to get a call by shooting up a crazy shot expecting a call, it didn't come then he hit Rondo at mid court and started to argue. This is Tyrus main problem, he gets upset sometimes and loses his cool, times like that LB needs to yank him and give it to him tough love style. Slam you may be right also, TT in his rookie year had a team in turmoil, they yelled and turned on the coaches, coaches yelled and turned on them, Tyrus needs a real coach and mentor type to teach him the ropes. I hope this team gets it together, maybe the slice o humble pie the Celtics smashed on their heads can get them going.

This is what I'm talking about. We always had guys like Steve Smith or Derek Anderson or Raja Bell etc on the roster that have been that voice of reason. Guys that can help keep a lid on things out on the court.

Now we have a hot head like Jax and guys that complain a lot like Crash, Felts and TC (when he plays!!).

Wish we had a playing mentor for T2 to keep him focused.

That's just it TTF. If he is getting a little off the rails and losing focus, I want someone to be able to set an example and tone him down a little.

Instead he's going to see his leaders like Jax going at it with Pierce and think it's ok.

Theo and Nazr (when he comes back) will be positive role models for tyrus I think that'll cancel out darth jax's influence

Well played Mr 704.

I hadn't really considered Nazzy and the effect he might have (out of sight, out of mind maybe?). Not sure he is a "take the young fella under my wing" type, but he sure is better than nothing.

For some reason they don't want James or Hughes. That reason baffles me whatever it is. I would try and get both.

Jackson is totally a loose cannon. I watched the Brawl in the palace live, and Jackson was the first guy to start throwing hay-makers. If he doesn't follow Ron into the stands it never gets that ugly. Everybody put most of the blame on Artest, but as yourself what Jackson would do if he was about to fight another player and somebody threw a beer in his face. Shooting gunz outside the script club was equally out of line yet somehow Tinsely took most of the rap. He gets crazy like "I don't give a **** crazy" from time to time.

Tyrus just seems kind of overly emotional to me. I think a lot of his stuff is over blown and has a little to do with maturity. It is asking a lot to expect these young kids who find themselves suddenly rich to act totally mature and professional 100% of the time. I have known a lot of 20-25 year olds that were not all that mature.

The reality though is we would not even be competing for the playoffs without Jackson. This is the baggage you take on by trading for him. This franchise could've made life easier by keeping Okafor, drafting Chris Paul, and taking Gay or Roy. The draft is where good teams are built and missing pieces are filled in with trades/FA. We've managed to build a competitive team by trading for guys and getting lucky with Wallace in the x-draft (which is actually kind of impressive). Our drafts have been horrendous and we've dealt away the future to compete now. As a defensively constructed team we'll have a chance to win and maybe pull out a big upset at least.

Also, before Jackson this team was full of emotionless goodie goodies with no fire. I'll take Jacksons mental break-downs a few times per season in exchange for being a tougher more firey team personally.
