Big NO to JR Smith (unless he would be banned from the team and held only as an expiring contract). He's a choker.

He would last until he pulled a Sprewell in practice.

I'll give Smith a pass on the choking thing because he was clearly provoked into this by the coaches. According to one source who spoke to the police, " The coach told the player to get physical with Smith, fouling and roughing him up." After the enforcer beats up on Smith the source says " Smith “lost it” and “tried to choke” the player…." So this goon who tried to play the enforcer role per coaches orders, could dish it out but couldn't take a little grappling and attempted throat grabbing and the first thing he wants to do is snitch to the police? How many basketball fights, whether it be in the streets, practice or a game have you seen where one of the parties involved in a basketball fight call the police? I can count one time and that was in the episode of "The White Shadow" where Salami broke the guys jaw and even Salami was found innocent because the guy was about to attack him and it was self defense. Also this all happened 3 days after Smith was put on the trading block. Sounds like Denver is trying to do it's best to run Smith out of town if you ask me. The man is a hothead, but this situation is a bunch of bologne.

There is never an excuse for choking someone on the court. Walk away dude. The guy is baiting you. If you don't have anymore control then that, you got problems. There is a difference between playing rough and assaulting someone. This guy seems to have a history here. I would pass on Smith.

Its actually not as simple as that... (I really hate defending JR)
Coaches told players to play physical and all that but keep in mind that you've got some training camp scrubs in building too - guys that'd do anything to get noticed and make the squad, and he's trying to make the squad all over JR's face. It goes on for one minute too long and unnamed training camp scrub #17 gets choked. Now, its clear that this scrub has started the altercation and these kinds of things happen regularly at training camps from the middle school level on up. However, instead of ending right there in house, the guy decides to report that incident to the police.
When questions get asked to the coaches and other players there it is immediately dismissed. Its a non-story.
Still, there are plenty of reasons not to like JR Smith though.

This isn't baiting, baiting is talking about your mother, or you, or your girlfriend, or something like this. The guy was ordered to rough up Smith, depending on what the goon player did it could have been assault itself. We don't know if Smith was undercut, got elbowed in the face, a nose or lip busted, or what! Also the source said JR tried to choke him, not that he did. What's strange isn't that it was a scuffle, it's that a coach orders a player to specifically target a player (the team is trying to trade away mind you) with rough play, and then after mild retaliation from the roughed up player, the enforcer becomes a snitch, not to the coaches or team owner, but directly to the police, this is what's so weird about this. I give Smith a pass here.

Re: Dare I say it... Carmelo Anthony
I read it that the player was ordered to be physical. That doesn't necessarily mean "rough up". Some of the best defenders I've seen play physical man to man defense.
I think your jumping to a conclusion teach.
Saying that, we don't really know what has occurred and whether the reaction was warranted or not, wait and see I guess.

Sachmo, I earlier put a statement that a witness gave, where he said...
ball teacher wrote:According to one source who spoke to the police, " The coach told the player to get physical with Smith, fouling and roughing him up."
I posted this a couple of days ago. I've been looking for the site that had this quote initially and all I can find is stories like from NBA fanhouse that have general statements saying the coaches wanted the player to be physical, and the coaches told everyone to be physical. However my quote specifically states the Smith was specified to get roughed up, fouled on, and played extra physically. Initially the police decided not to file any charges, now they appear to be reopening the case since another witness decided to come forward, and maybe the police got wind of who the JR Smith is. I don't care about JR Smith, I care that this story sounds bogus. You don't target somebody in basketball to be roughed up or physical treatment and that's number one, number two the coaches witnessing this spectacle didn't stop the guys and calm the tensions when the witnesses said they were already pretty heated before the guy was ordered to be even more physical, and three Smith attempting to choke the guy is reason for this goon to walk or run to his cell phone and call the police? C'mon man, I played ball in alot of rough neighborhoods and I've never seen anybody call the police from scuffles that didn't even involve a punches being thrown. This is only gonna have one victim and it's going to be JR Smith, the player the Nuggets are trying to get rid of anyway, and it really seems to me they set this all up. Why do they want a player they're trying to get rid of to get roughed up anyways? C'mon fellas, you gotta see this is a fishy story.

I found the link where I got my quotes from.....

Here's the blog
" Wednesday afternoon the Denver Police Department confirmed that Nuggets Guard J.R. Smith, allegedly choked a player at the team’s facility this month. According to our sources, the player is not a member of the Nuggets organization but lives in the Denver area and played for the now-defunct Colorado 14ers.
Our source tells us that several players including Smith, were working out in various drills at the team facility. Smith and the player had been in heated competition the entire session, and one of the assistant coaches paired the player and Smith in one-on-one drill. The coach told the player to get physical with Smith, fouling and roughing him up.
After several possessions of getting fouled, Smith “lost it” and “tried to choke” the player…..
Given Smith’s track record and history of bad behavior, trying to choke someone probably isn’t the smartest thing to do. But our sources won’t confirm that Smith actually “choked” this player, rather both were involved in physical altercation, with the player getting the worst of altercation.
It’s disappointing that a member of the Nuggets coaching staff would encourage a player to rough up Smith, as by know they must be familiar with his temper and track record. It’s one thing to play physical basketball but to intentionally provoke someone on the court is whack. Even more disappointing, is that this player would call the police after a fight on the basketball court.
I’m from the era where people didn’t snitch, but in this era it seems like snitching is the ****.
Summer basketball can be explosive, complete with physicality.. There are no real refs and coaches conducting workouts tend to encourage excessive physicality. If I had a dime for every-time I an summertime beef on the court, I’d be a millionaire. Whoever this kid is needs to grow a pair or don’t step on the court with NBA players.
It is a privilege to share the court with NBA players, let alone workout at the Nuggets facility, something this player should never do again. Our sources tell us that the player was too physical with Smith, but didn’t condone Smith’s reaction. With no charges being pressed, it’s apparent that either the D.A. didn’t feel that there was enough evidence to warrant charges, which brings to question the severity of the incident.
Smith has to understand that his chances are running out. The Nuggets have been trying to move him for a year and this latest incident hurts that cause. He’s spent time in jail last summer and is the poster child for the new generation of NBA malcontent. Last year at times, it looked like Smith wasn’t on the same page as his teammates or coaches, disrupting chemistry.
Were it not for his immense talent, the Nuggets would have traded the volatile guard. His maturity or lack thereof, is the X-factor for the Nuggets success this season and Smith can’t waste his time with non-ballers with something to prove to coaches.
It’s a lose-lose situation."
