New D-League Rule

Post#1 » by Jaruff » Sat Oct 23, 2010 1:39 am

This was posted in the General Forum and thought I would bring it up here.

According to this, teams can claim the rights of up to three of the last players they cut from their training camp roster. For us, that means that we could claim the rights to Darius Miles, Matt Rogers, and Javaris Crittenton and have them play for the Red Claws this year if they want to play in the D-League.

Not sure about Darius or Javaris but I think there's a good chance we could see Matt playing for the Red Claws this year. LB was high on him and it makes sense to keep him in the D until you can free a roster spot up by trading/buying out/waiving/whatever Najera/Diop/???.

Dallas pretty much abused it to grab two NBA-level players for their new D-League team (Nelson is a part-owner) but this could actually help us.

Speaking of the D-League, I don't know how much it costs for a team but I wish the Bobcats would bring the Greenville Groove back.

Well, I think that's one way of looking at it. If those players decide to play in the D-League, you own their rights so I'm assuming that you could call them up whenever. So, if Rogers decides to play in the D-League this year, it will be for the Maine Red Claws and we will have his D-League rights from what I understand.

So owning his rights means that no one else could call him up - meaning teams can have 18 guys on their roster.

That seems stupid to me.

i dont think we own their rights. if we assign rogers to red claws any team could still sign him.

agreed, you get situations like Patty Mills who is desperate to play in the NBA but has to hope that Portland somehow cut someone as they won't relinquish his rights.

this rule only allows teams to have players from their training camp sent to their d-league affiliate. however, if a team sends an unsigned player (not on their 15 man roster), it doesnt give them the right to prevent other teams from signing that player. it only gives them the chance to watch them more closely by having them play for their affiliate.

Ah, that makes sense. Well, I guess that still helps us by keeping an eye on Rogers if he decides to play?

So invite 30 guys to your training camp so they play for your D league team in order to keep them closer to you in case you have an open roster spot and need to call someone up?
