1 Reason Not to Amnesty Tyrus Thomas

Post#1 » by captaincrunk » Fri Apr 20, 2012 2:22 am

The amnesty isn't something you do just to do it. We're nowhere near the tax, and we'll be close to the salary floor. When you amnesty a player you need to gain something.

So unless you have something specific in mind, when you moan and whimper, calling for Tyrus's head on a silver amnesty platter, you look pretty foolish. Your post looks foolish I mean. The posters are all brilliant.

Bonnell said that we'd need to amnesty somebody to clear up enough cap room to sign a FA worth a damn.

Yes, I know, Rick Bonnell is usually more wrong than right but I guess what I'm saying is...

What is our cap situation exactly?

I'd give Tyrus one more season, if its more of the same next year, then its addition by subtraction IMO, he can still be a serviceable sixth man off the bench ala nick collison if he gets his mind right

The amnesty clause really isn't designed for small market teams like us anyway. It's more useful for those big spending, large market franchises that need to cut salary tax and or cap space to sign their next big FA

I guess the main reason I would consider the amnesty on Tyrus was how he responded in the offseason and what he is like in the locker room.

Tyrus with his contract is going to be due some playing time, playing time that another younger play won't get. If we get good young talent and Tyrus comes in unfit, with a crap attitude.
Get rid of the mo fo, we don't need that crap when we're trying to build a culture.

You can amnesty when you're ready to sign then.

Tyrus is garbage and will always be garbage so don't anyone get their hopes up that he might be something. Bobcats (and Bulls) fans know better. Chicago got tired of his act and we are too. Having said that, there is almost no chance we amnesty him. The plan is to get his lame ass to at least show some signs of life under a new coach next season then ship him away at the all star break, just so we don't have to look at him anymore. He will be gone by next summer.

Tyrus is just not a good teammate. Heck we might just cut his ass if we're lucky to get Davis in the draft. Can't have TT's negative attitude infecting Davis. If we get Davis then I'd immediately offer TT in a trade and if nobody wants him then I would seriously consider releasing or using the amnesty on him. Good riddance. But first I would try to instill some fear in him this summer to see if he can at least show up in shape and ready to play next season. But make no mistake about it, first time he strings together 2 good games in a row, then we look to trade him. Either way, he's not long for Charlotte after stealing MJ's money.

LOL. Nick Collison? Are you serious? There is no way ever that Tyrus will set good, proper screens, dive after loose balls, pound the glass, understand his limitations (that would mean fg attempts only inside the paint) and play good D (blocking shots doesn't mean defense). I can't imagine him "getting his mind THAT right".

Not to mention physical reasons. Nobody needs a 6'10 forward who weighs 200 and can't make a jumpshot to save his life (but doesn't shy away either).

I agree with Battery. If we land Davis, then Tyrus needs to go. We don't need his poor attitude, low BBIQ, non-motivated, chucking ways on our team. If fact, judging from our play this season, we need to be adding the exact opposite to our team (high character / high BBIQ players). The guy will be near impossible to trade and with Davis, Biyombo, and Mullens we'll have plenty of options at PF.

But if we end up with some other guy in the draft, then it's probably best to hold on to him for another season.

:( :x :o NOWAY do we amensity TT. Diop Maybe. He has trade value even with his big contract.
We need to try to do a 2-2 trade and include DJA as soon as season is over. Maybe we get a young 2-3 and a veteran point with locker room leadership experience. How about the rights to Raymond Felton and Nolan Smith from Portland for DJA and TT? We then either sign Raymond or let him walk now and sign another FA. Noland is an all around player at 2 and could replace Carroll after next year.Portland can use big man shot blocker.
TT contract is gone and Portland gets rights to Augustine.

 at TT trade value.

We tried our best to trade him this year, but no one wanted any part if him.

He is negative value

Even though Tyrus Thomas seems to be a lazy version of Joe Smith, I wouldn't amnesty him until after next season. Assuming he plays just as well as he has. That all said, there are plenty of reasons to amnesty him now.
The Kings put good money on the table for Travis Outlaw, some team will look at Tyrus and think hes just part of a bad situation with Charlotte. Hes 25 which will help draw teams to him. If you want to change a culture, getting rid of a guy who got into it with the Head Coach is a good place to start.

To the person who says TT has trade value. Unless hes paired with our lottery pick, no team is trading for him. The only trade I could think of that would make any sense in reality would be to trade him to the Lakers for M. World Peace. You want that trade to happen? Over just amnestying him?

Yeah, that's what the Bobcats need right at the beginning of their rebuilding process - tons of cap room to sign free agents!

No reason AT ALL to amnesty Thomas this summer. If he doesn't want to be in Charlotte, he can play his way off the bench. (I don't buy the "he's a cancer in the locker room" stuff just yet. It's most likely been a LONG season for just about everyone on the team).

Even if he were a cancer, you can just sit him at home if you want him gone that badly. Without blowing your amnesty load on the floor.

i am all for giving tyrus one last summer to prove he can contribute in some for. i hope that MJ, silas, cho and higgins have a serious talk with him this summer and tell him to get his ass in shape, put on some weight and come back to camp ready to play, or else he will ride the bench or get cut.

as far as amnesty on tyrus, it still makes financial sense for MJ (if he feels tyrus can no longer contribute).

we owe tyrus 24 mil over 3 years. if you amnesty tyrus the hope is that another team would sign him to a small deal. lets say he signs with another team for 3 years / 6mil. that 6 mil comes off the amount we owe him. that saves MJ six mil. that is the incentive for using the amnesty on tyrus, even if we dont use his cap space right away.

Yeah but if you hold onto the, you can use it strategically. It's kind of like you guys are setting up landmines without even knowing what direction the enemy may come from.

I seem to be in the minority but I fully believe w/ every fiber of my bean that Maggette is a bigger amnesty canidate that TT. This team put up an all time worse record and I think in addition to what will hopefully be the #1 pick, MJ, Cho and crew are gonna want to get a player of some significance be it thru FA or trade, to sell to the paying audience. And Maggette's contract opens up more cap room now.....if not him then it will be Diop because he contributes nothing to the team, they are not going to just let TT go and they still owe what is looking like a potential very high lottery pick for him
