We wouldn't be but I don't think the difference would be as big as you think and we would be much better off going forward with a top ten pick in one of the best drafts in a while and pretty much unlimited cap space. With Jefferson we are neglecting to develop our young core for the future and very possibly setting ourselves up to get stuck in mediocrity. I think we definitely get 30+ wins without Jefferson. 30 wins without Jefferson is better for the future than 39 or 40 wins and getting destroyed by Indiana or Miami in the first round with Jefferson.
Welcome to the board, and I respect your opinion, but this has been discussed so many times I feel nauseous to it. I personally do not feel we even sniff 30 wins without Jefferson, and I think we would be doing the team ana injustice without trying to win. I think this draft is overrated overall. There is no transcendent player, aka a Lebron, Durant, or anything of that nature. What if we didn't sign Jefferson and won 30 games like you think we would have and gotten the 7th or 8th pick? Is Aaron Gordon worth blowing another season over? I don't think so.
We absolutely wouldn't be drafting Aaron Gordon at that spot... History and facts are on my side of the argument. What is the farthest a team has went with Jefferson being their focal point? Read my post again for edit about how much Al has improved our offense. We won 21 games last year without a competent coaching staff and added a fourth overall pick that is showing real promise now that he is actually getting a chance. 30 wins would be about the same improvement as we made from the 7 win season to last year. I don't see why we couldn't make that same improvement with a completely overhauled coaching staff and our young core that is the real future of this team would have more opportunities to improve together. If we won less games we would have a better shot at landing a star in this draft. The draft is somewhat overrated. Thre aren't superstars on the level of Lebron or KD but there are legitimate star talents. Our young core is good enough that we don't really need a Lebron or a KD to make us perennial contenders for the eastern conference finals and maybe even have a chance get the finals. Only two teams have a Lebron or KD and there are certainly more than two teams who have a real chance at the finals this year. Wiggins, Embiid, Parker, Randle, Vonleh and likely some others all have far more potential than Jefferson and could easily end up being in the second tier of stars behind the two gods of the NBA right now. Jefferson has already proven what he is and where he can get you and that is pretty much nowhere. I don't even see how you could argue against this unless your only goal for this team is the first round.
