Back when I gave two **** about college basketball, I watched a ton of UNCC games. UNCC had a very respectable basketball program in the late 90s under Bobby Lutz. They had a nice rivalry with Louisville (from the old Metro Conference days) and Cincinnati (from the Conf-USA) days. They were ranked in the top 25 several times during that time frame. They almost knocked off a stacked UNC team in the NCAA tournament (I think it was round of 32). Of course, others mentioned the late 70s run to the final four with Cornbread.
Former Bobcats color commentator Henry Williams was a star at UNCC (and later in Europe).
They were coached by former Duke and NBA player Jeff Mullins during the 80s.
The coach of the 1977 team was Lee Rose, who was later an assistant for the Hornets.
Some others that were very good for UNCC
- Cornbread Maxwell - best player in school history
- Byron Dinkins - point guard from my high school (East Meck), played briefly for the Houston Rockets
- Henry Williams - he might be school all-time leading scorer, too short for shooting guard, not a point guard.
- Jarvis Lang - undersized power forward, think poor mans Larry Johnson
- DeMarco Johnson - nice power forward, tad too small for NBA, but great college player. I really thought he would stick on an NBA roster.
- Galen Young - great wing defender, poor mans Eddie Jones, played in D-league. Almost made some NBA rosters.
- Eddie Basden - another great wing defender, probably best in last 10 years for UNCC. Played in NBA briefly.
- Sean Colsten - offensive point guard. Made an NBA roster.
- Rodney White - only one year at UNCC, talented but didn't give a crap. NBA lottery bust. Kinda like Michael Beasley/Tobias Harris type game (and attitude). Bit of a tweener.
- Curtis Withers - high profile forward as freshman, Played on some USA youth teams, never got much better, still was borderline NBA talent, tad undersized.
- Leemire Goldwire - point guard, D-league caliber.
- Jobey Thomas - white 3-point specialist. DEEEP NBA range. no lateral quickness.
- Diego Gueverra - typical college gunner point guard. Microwave type shooter.
Sadly, I have only watched a handful of UNCC games since they fired Bobby Lutz (who I can't believe is still an assistant and not a head coach - dude was a fantastic coach).

Re: Mark Price offered UNCC job (pg. 3)
btw, any UNCC nerds want to give their opinion on Pierra Henry? The one game I did watch last year, I thought he looked like a borderline NBA/D-league player. Great size for a guard, great defender, good rebounder, 6'5" point guard, averaged 10ppg, 5rpg, 5apg, 2.5spg. Seems like his scoring never got any better. I wonder if he figured out how to shoot in the next 2-3 years if he could emerge from the D-league one day.

The physical tools are there for him to make an NBA roster or be productive in the D-league, it's just his brain that needs some work. Like you said he's a great defender and can rebound well, plus being 6'5 playing point definitely doesn't hurt. Terrible shooter and he takes some really bad shots on top of that. The main thing holding him back is at times he goes completely brain dead and makes some terrible decisions with the ball.

I've made it out to most of them, probably around 3/4 of the games we've had so far.
