Why can't it just be an enjoyable experience and a celebration of the game?

I'd rather see guys making fun, fancy passes or Curry shooting (and hitting) from 40ft early in the shot clock and playground one on ones between James and Bryant than the guys going full out (and risking injury).

What's wrong with just having fun?

well, getting hurt is part of the game and its the reason why these guys get paid tens of millions of $$. The allstar game comes but ONCE in an year, with the best players in the game all coming together. It is a huge waste of talent when these guys don't even try, and worse its a slap in the face to the fans who paid thousands of dollars to come and see these stars give it their all. I think David Stern was right when he gave guys crap for not putting any effort. When Stern was the comissioner, the players actually put some effort into playing. If the nba doesn't do something about this, the ASG is going to turn into a huge joke, aka the pro bowl 2.0. Adam Silver should make some rule changes and give the players a reason to win the ASG. Emulating the system that MLB has for its allstar games would be more than enough to get the players interested.

Getting hurt in a game that doesn't mean anything is not a part of the game and it's not why these guys get paid tens of millions of dollars. The ASG should have zero impact on an NBA teams season. The only way it does is if someone gets hurt. Paul George snapped is leg in a scrimmage that didn't matter for a team that doesn't pay him tens of millions of dollars and it ruined the Pacers season.

I'd be livid if Kemba made the ASG and goes out there, busts his ass and breaks his ankle and now we are out of the playoff race because of it. So what fans can watch one game?

Not even Coach Pop was taking the game seriously. The game is just a fun exhibition to watch guys do things you don't ever get to see them do. They don't get real practice time to go over anything. So essentially the defense would be poor anyway. I'd much rather it be a fun game to watch exciting plays than seeing sloppy play for a game that tries to matter and seeing guys get hurt.

Literally no one does that. No one goes to the All Star game expecting playoff effort.

bigbob wrote:I think David Stern was right when he gave guys crap for not putting any effort. When Stern was the comissioner, the players actually put some effort into playing.

No they didn't. I'm having to seriously question your age, because no one has ever cared in the ASG before the second half of the 4th quarter.

bigbob wrote:If the nba doesn't do something about this, the ASG is going to turn into a huge joke, aka the pro bowl 2.0.

It's not a joke, it's a networking and publicity event and that's what it has been for years. It's not a serious game and it shouldn't be.

As your boy David Stern said - "It's not the NBA Finals, it's not even a regular-season game. It's the All-Star game, it's a celebration ... I think the fans are there to celebrate the sport and its component parts. I think everyone gets a sense of how extraordinary these athletes are. And our players want to play and strut their stuff.''

alot of kids and fans who are expecting a blast of a game are left dissapointed. If the players are going to play like that, its better to not even have the ASG...just leave it at the celebrity game, rising all stars and the skills challenge. Don't build up hype and the expectations for no reason. If the league doesn't make the ASG mean something, ie homecourt advantage for the winners in the finals, then the ASG is going to remain a side show act done by side show bob.

Fans are not there to "celebrate the game", they're there hoping for an epic clash between the best of the best. Extraordinary?? Lol, everyone is extraordinary in the NBA, theres probably 100 guys in the NBA who can dunk like zach lavine without breaking a sweat, another 500 in the D league. The difference between nba all stars and the other guys is that all stars can score.

You realize you are arguing with the view articulated by David Stern, the guy you said had a better understanding of the purpose of the game, right?

Wait, someone is STILL surprised/mad/disappointed that the ASG has zero defensive effort?

I don't remember the last time it was a serious event. I admire (not really) the effort here bigbob, but you're kind of trying to nail jello to a tree

Just realized that next year in Charlotte we hopefully get a Klay/Steph tie breaker on Steph's home turf.

We also hopefully get a rematch of LaVine and Gordon. LaVine trying to be the first to three peat in the dunk contest.

Also we better have Kemba in the skills challenge.

Ric Flair in the celebrity game.
Frank in the rookie Vs sophomore game.
A re-signed JLin in the skills comp.
Lamb in the 3pt shootout.
MKG in the dunk comp.
Kemba and a re-signed Bats in the All Star game.

;)
