I think it has something to do with the way the max is set up. Like the max rises to 120% of the player's salary the previous year or something like that (Blackout no doubt knows the specifics), which is why CP3's max is insanely large and Devin Booker's is small by comparison.

I'm with you though, especially in cases of players who aren't getting the max anyway (like Marv) why not front load it? Seems like an opportunity that isn't being used.

nope, their max contracts are different because Booker has 3 years of NBA experience and is allowed 25% of the cap, and CP3 has 10+ years of experience and is allowed 35%

Ah, gotcha. I must have read the 120% thing somewhere else. In any case, it's a little crazy to think of almost 40yo (possibly washed up by the end of his deal) CP3 making significantly more money than a 25ppg player in what will likely be his prime years.

He'll turn 37 in the playoffs the last year of that deal. I think he'll still be a good player, just not $44M good.
