No kidding, I swear he would give his left arm to have a 3some with Larry Bird and Bill Russell.

fatlever wrote:sure. adding what you consider to be prime will be a nice added bonus. i was planning on doing that for my posts.

who do you have as better than hakeem offensively?
1. kareem
2. wilt
3. shaq?

is this where we debate shaq vs hakeem again? :) or where we debate what defines being better offensively, averaging more points or having more offensive skills. shaq in his prime was a more dominate scorer than hakeem, but hakeem was most definitely more skilled offensively. he just didnt have shaq's brute size and strength. but i am ok with shaq at #3 on the offensive rankings.

he may not be the best offensive center in terms of raw scoring but you could argue he was the most well rounded offensive center. he had the 2nd best post moves of his era behind mchale. he also was amazingly quick and could dunk with power. finish over players. he had a baseline jumper and a fadeaway jumper. to top it off he was a 70%+ ft shooter. had the best feet of any big man. and was one of the best passing bigs. he was almost like watching a guard in a 7-footers body.

first of many many debates in this thread i imagine.

of the top 10 centers, hakeem is #2 on the defensive side of the ball behind russell. so even if he is #4 on offense and #2 on defense thats quite a combo, but i know nobody is arguing defense.

Personally, I don't care about how the points are scored. Dunks, hook shots, threes shot exclusively granny style... it's just about how often the ball goes in the hoop. All the talk of "skilled" versus "good" is only relevant if you're making a point about matchups, or perhaps about how a player will improve or decline. So for me, Shaq has to come out in the top 3, it's just a matter of era discussion about how to compare Shaq, Kareem, and Wilt on the offensive side of the ball.

Anyway, no question as you said having the guy who's #4 on O and #2 on D is hardly a bad decision.

Dammit! All of the Top 5 Centers of All-Time are now gone. :(

For the ABA category, I select...

Image

Moses Malone

• was one of the most dominant big men of all time
• 11-time All-Star
• 3-time MVP
• one of only seven players in the NBA history to have won three or more MVP awards (78-79, 81-82, 82-83)
• won six rebounding titles, including five straight from 1980-1984.
• holds the all time highest total for most offensive rebounds
• ranks 7th all-time in the NBA with 27,409 career points
• won a championship and was the Finals MVP in the 82-83 season

For the Front Office category, I select...

Image

Jerry West

• 14-time All-Star
• 1-time NBA champion (1972)
• the only player from the losing team to be named the Finals MVP
• he was best when it mattered most -- he wouldn't be "Mr. Clutch" for nothing as he averaged 30.5 points a night in 55 Finals games
• averaged 27 points, 5.8 rebounds and 6.7 assists
• made into the NBA All-Defense team for five times
• he is The Logo

damn ian.... you are now on my list along with lamar. ;) moses was my guy for my next pick.

moses was a destructive force on the boards like no player before him. wilt and those guys in the 60s grabbed a ton of boards because teams were taking 150 shots per game and shooting 40% in the process. moses averaged a higher percentage of his team's rebounds than all those guys. and in the 81 and 83 playoffs he kicked kareems ass.

and damn, you stole the logo as well.

back to the drawing board for me

Sorry about that. :( I really want to have a dominant big man on my team. I still can't get over that I lost my chance in the previous scavenger draft because I don't have a good big on my roster.

I had a hard time choosing between The Logo and a forward. I just went with Jerry West because you can't go wrong with someone who's a top 5 shooting guard of all time and a true basketball legend.

Stun, Duncan is still active. Players have to be retired to be eligible. :(

- Player selected must be retired, either didn't play in 2010-11 in NBA or any other league or officially announced retirement ala Shaq.

So which do you all think is the weakest category? I can't decide between the basketball mecca, relatives and all star weekend contest ones.

as of now, the coaching category is pretty depleted. I found a pretty awesome list online that compiled ALL NBA relatives, including cousins, half-brothers, etc. Found some interesting sleepers in that cat.

NY is pretty up and down for me, it depends on if guys get picked in other cats and vice versa. It's really hard to say for sure.

I'm mainly going BPA and finding the most difficult cat to fit them into. Hopefully it'll work out for me

Interesting pick. I would've tried to target a stretch 4 to put next to Shaq since they both are high usage players that play at the rim, either off P&R or post ups. I will say though, that's one hell of an athletic front court. Easily two of the strongest post players to ever step on a court.

And I caught myself putting a few current players on my lists so I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Charles Barkley - glass cleaner - averaged 14.6 rpg in 86-87

peak 86-93 where he averaged 25.5ppg 12.0rpg 4.5apg 57%fg
best season 92-93 25.6ppg 12.2rpg 5.1apg leading suns to the finals

1993 MVP
11 time all-star
5 time 1st team all-nba, 5 time 2nd team all-nba

the round mound of rebound, one of the leagues greatest rebounders and one of the top power forwards in the history of the league. when he was motivated and dedicated, he was nearly unstoppable. never has there been a player who combined size, quickness and strength like barkley.

when the dream team got together in 1992 it was Barkley who was right there with MJ dominating everyone in practice. He was the leading scorer on that team.

his laid back, fun loving off court demeanor will offset oscars never-ending intensity. yin and yang. a match made in heaven.
