just so we are all on the same page, everyone here does know that hornets and charlotte have a historical connection dating back to the revolutionary war, right? let me know if a history lesson is in order. i dont mean that in a condescending way. i just wanted to make sure everyone understood why the original franchise was named the hornets in the first place.

That is true, but in this case the the term Hornets is directly associated to a basketball team that no longer exists in Charlotte and not to the revolutionary war.

I think it's great that the original franchise was called the Hornets and was obviously very fitting - but this current franchise is not the original franchise. It's the Bobcats. A new franchise.

For the record: It's not the name "Hornets" that I am opposed to. I don't want the franchise re-branded as the Cougars or the Flight or the Michael Jordan's either.

I just want to stay what we were brought in the NBA as and what we currently are.

The Bobcats.

I'm ok with changing the uni designs and even the uni colours, but leave our birth name what it was when we were born.

The Bobcats.

What is the big news?

Post#104 » by ohara » Tue Mar 20, 2012 12:46 pm

http://www.carolinahuddle.com/boards/to ... ming-soon/

Got this link off of BCP Thread this morning. Has anyone else heard anything about a major announcment coming down soon? Would be interesting if it is a name change. Or perhaps we are on the upswing and MJ is going to sell and take the money and run. Anyway, just putting this out and we can see what happens in the near future.

Actually, this is the first I heard of it. Saw the link and it took me there.

Slam, if they were merely buying out Diaw, would not think it would be a big announcment. But hey, maybe they are just saying it and trying to get a little pub for the team today. Who knows. Guess if it deal with merchandise, maybe they are going to refuse to sell any more Diaw jerseys and are pulling them off the shelves. Better hurry and go get yours before it's gone! :D

If it was indeed a name change it will either be the Flight or Cougars. Logically the name cant be changed to the Hornets since New Orleans is using the name. Probably a color change to the jerseys or something.

Either way im more focused on the development of Walker, Biyombo, and Henderson and letting the ping pong balls roll our way.

No, the possibility is strong that the Hornets name could be reaquired after this season is over. With the new lease agreement in New Orleans, and a new owner likely by June 1st, it is a logical time for them to rebrand that team uniquely to the local area. Nobody there is in love with the transferred brand, and it's association with Shinn is venom to many of their fans.

If MJ is hip to it, I am sure the league (current owner) would be glad to assist in the handoff of the name and brand back to Charlotte.

The original poster of the info (employee) says the pending announcement seems to coincide with no ordering of merchandise yet for next season. That's either a rebrand or a shutdown.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Renaming the team would be neat, but it isn't on my list of things that need to be accomplished right now, although it would hopefully replace the god awful bobcat colors.

I've seen alot of people say it was a joke also, but we will see.

Whatever happened to those black jerseys we were supposed to have this season? I'm kidding, but really, we still lack an alternate jersey. Most teams have three uniforms and we've only had two for the last... four or so years? So maybe that's it or maybe it's a color/logo change?

I know the Hornets carry a sentimental value for a lot of you guys, but I think our name/colors are far better. Plus teal is outdated and they're yellow uniforms are UG-LY!

I thought the Purple and Teal were awesome colors. I don't recall us ever using yellow while the Hornets were in Charlotte. Not sure about New Orleans.

I did see an article online that stated that Retro Charlotte Hornets gear was largely outselling any kind of Bobcat merchandise.

Well Bassman, for all our sakes, I hope it's a rebrand and not a shutdown. Cant take losing another team.

I thought Mike had already squashed the nonsense about changing the name back to the Hornets. Why do you want that dumb name back anyway. I could see wanting back the color scheme, but I hated the name Hornets when the original team was here.

Hornets are a better name than the Bobcats.

Either way I don't care THAT much. I just want Anthony Davis.

I never said the name shouldn't change. I could live with a name change. I just don't see the point of making our guys live in the shadow of a team that abandoned the city, and still is on the brink of failure.

Im not too sure if its necessarily about the team that left, but more about the name. I have to admit, I do miss the purple and teal colors but Im not going to act all pissy and moan if we dont get a name change. Great if we do and if we dont oh well.
