It's kinda funny how these groups are using the situation as an attempt to garner some personal positive press. Does anybody really think Pearl Jam gives a flying **** about a) NC politics in general or b) transgender people in general? I'd say no. But it does give them a good platform to "make a statement"

Actually I do totally believe it. Pretty much everyone I know with connections to the music biz indicates that it's full of non-straight folks. It may not be in the band, but maybe someone in the crew, or in management, or something. It's a factor.
Oh, I'm sure that there is some grandstanding. That's inevitable, but don't overlook the personal factor. I'm NOT in the biz and live a very happy straight life with my wife and two kids, but I have gay extended family, personally know more than one trans person (including a fairly young one through an entirely different side of the family). That personal interaction really does inform how I think and feel about some of these issues. As always, YMMV, and I get that others don't share my views. No harm no foul there.

My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

The Federal appeals court just ruled on a similar issue in a case in Virginia.
The Fourth Circuit, which ruled on this issue with a 3-judge panel, has both Virginia and North Carolina within its five state jurisdiction. So its rulings are binding on not just Virginia, but North Carolina as well.
But since the situations in the two states are not entirely identical, not all elements of the North Carolina situation are addressed.

The Charlotte Hornets/Bobcats can't have nice things. You just know we are going to lose the ASG. It's our destiny.

I wish the NBA would announce its latest franchise - The London Nancy Boys - so I can be done with NC once and for all. My father is moving away from CLT in June - the last thread connecting me there.

I am, once again, not shocked by the ridiculous polarization this issue has generated. Going nuclear, it seems, has become the new normal. No wonder Trump is winning.
And I find it tragically funny that the NBA is threatening a state. My how we bite the hand that feeds...
North Carolina has made this law and now it'll have to deal with the consequences, both good and bad. I might not agree with everything in the law, but I applaud NC's government for having the balls to do it. Which I can't say the same for GA and TN, who knuckled under the corporate threat carpet bomb. I think the state of North Carolina will survive.

the balls to do what? its very easy for the state to continue to be xenophobic and bigotted

I think this is a really annoying situation, but I do really like how Adam Silver is handling it. That guy continues to impress me.

I agree, it takes balls to be a hypocrite - using big government to strike down local laws. How courageous of them, championing the cause of fear, bigotry, and ignorance. The fact that so many people latched on to the bathroom bs that they concocted to distract them from what the law actually does is pathetically sad.
It's really a great illustration of why this country is struggling. We are no longer well informed to the degree needed as a society to be able to see through propaganda. Too many of us eat it up and ask for more, all the while wondering why we can't seem to get ahead.
We cling to our tribal affiliations (Republican, Democrat, Christian, etc.) and demonize everyone that isn't a member. We've closed our minds to the process of seeking out truth and avoid critically thinking for ourselves, preferring to be told from someone else who the boogie man/woman is causing our problems.
The result is that everyone has been divided into sides and we can no longer treat each other with dignity and respect. We are the Divided States of America and the state of our union is as weak as it's ever been outside of the Civil War.

If were easy, TN and GA would have done the same as NC.
And this is not a xenophobic nor bigoted law. I reject those labels. All laws are discriminatory to someone, whether we like it or not. And the simple fact is that if we don't like a law, we have due process in the courts and the ability to change representation to reflect our views. An unfair and damaging law will not stand the test of time. Prohibition taught us that.
What's not easy is to have the courage to make an unpopular move, which NC has done. And, again, though I don't agree with everything in the law, I applaud the courage of the action.

Re: Charlotte All-Star Game 2017 -
so, what are the realistic chances this law is overturned in time to save the ASG? Am I crazy for thinking that the chances are very very slim, almost nil? I feel like the only way this law is changed is via several election cycles, with those in favor being voted out. I hope I am wrong.

i think they meet later this week (could be wrong on that), so if its going to get overturned it should be soon.

Technically Silver didn't say it needed to be overturned, he's just saying it needs to changed.
“We’ve been, I think, crystal clear a change in the law is necessary for us to play in the kind of environment that we think is appropriate for a celebratory NBA event,” Silver said at the APSE event.
“They know what’s at stake in terms of the All-Star Game. But at least at the moment, constructive engagement on our part is the best way to go as opposed to putting a gun to their head and saying ‘do this or else,’” Silver said.
“I’m not sure what statement we would have been making by pulling the All-Star Game but saying we’re absolutely fine playing our playoff game in Charlotte,” Silver said.
“What’s most important to this league is that there be a change in the law. It’d be easy to make a statement, but I can’t cut and run here. I’m leaving my team there,” he added.
McCrory has already said that he's open to changes and that he'll continue to engage in discussions about how to improve the law. The question is whether there is a realistic middle ground between what the NBA wants and what the NC legislature can tolerate. Don't know the answer to that.
