I don't see why monk cant be every bit as good as Bradley Beal. Thats a dang steal at #11.

Its kinda out there to project a 19 yo kid to be better than Beal but lets just say i got a really, really good feeling about this kid.

Im thinking poor man's Curry. If his ballhandling develops this guy is gonna be a nice late game option when kemba wears down in the 4th per usual.

We didnt have anyone who could get buckets for us besides lamb and kemba last year. Scoring is overrated until you dont have ANY

Beal (despite being a bit short) has the bulk and strength to be a full time SG in the NBA. Remains to be seen if Monk's slight frame allows him to do the same or if it relegates him to being a combo guard.

If Monk was built like Beal, he wouldn't have slipped past #3 or #4 in the draft.

Give me any kid who has talent, coupled with his confidence, and a great desire to be the best. Monk seems to have some of that "IT" factor that any player needs to become their best. Thrilled he is on our team.

I've said every year since 2014 that we NEED to draft a big time 3-point shooting SG in the mold of Klay Thompson. We passed on LaVine in 2014 and Booker in 2015. WE FINALLY DID IT. Now he's got to prove that he is as advertised. I haven't been this hyped about a draft pick of ours in the last 10 years and that includes MKG, Biyombo, and Vonleh, all of whom I was seriously hyped about.

Agreed! I think I was pretty excited that Vonleh fell bc he was supposed to go higher, but he was so raw that it was hard to know what to expect. With shooters, you know what you are getting and we never went after those guys. I just can't wait to see him in the summer league and see how his game is going to translate in our type system. Can we get this season started yet?!?!

I'd love an updated account of his measurables. Pre-draft I noted that Monk actually outreaches Mitchell, despite the latter having a 7-inch wingspan advantage at the same height. Only explanation seemingly being Monk's slight frame compared to Mitchell's abnormally large one, but Monk actually compares favourably to other recent SG prospects when you look at height, weight, and standing reach. The wingspan, however, is a big outlier. (It should also be noted that Monk's vertical numbers are the best of this following group, with he and McLemore clearly superior to the rest of the class).

Seems crazy that the shortest guy, with the shortest wingspan, has a middle of the road standing reach amongst this group. But maybe it's simpler than a small frame, maybe someone just miscalculated.

Monk was one of many top prospects to skip the combine, so his most recent testing numbers come from from his Kentucky pro-day from before his freshman season. The draftexpress database - http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Malik-Monk-7243/ - features 10 different occasions from 2012-16 in which measurements were taken on Monk at various camps, including multiple Nike and USA basketball camps.

Prior to his 6-3.5 wingspan measurement at the Kentucky combine, Monk hadn't had a wingspan measurement shorter than 6-6 since 2013 at a USA camp, when he was 14 and measured 6-5.25. His wingspan subsequently measured 6-6 at 6 camps between then and the Kentucky combine, with one blip at 6-7 at another USA camp.

So, what's more likely? That his wingspan shortened 3 inches over time, or that 7 different camps over-estimated?

The whole T-Rex narrative was built upon his Kentucky measurables, but it seems pretty clear that number is wrong. Monk is probably 6-3 with a 6-6 wingspan, which makes a lot more sense with an 8-3 standing reach. But hey, it probably helped him fall a bit.

Yeah I was looking at his measurements before the draft and I agree the Kentucky wing span is a total outlier.

Not that height matters vs wing span and standing reach, but I also noticed that Beal and a couple other similar players were gaining about 1.5" from their shoes, where as Monk only gained 3/4" from his. I'm not sure if they measure standing reach barefoot or in shoes. I watch an unhealthy amount of basketball but have never been able to bring myself to watch the combine. I've always wondered if some guys pad their shoes like I've heard.

It's a Kentucky thing. Monk's WS is 6'6" and perhaps more. He was between 15 and 17 years old when consistently registering 6'6".

I'm sure they pad their shoes. If you can increase your draft position by padding your shoes, why wouldn't you? $$

Oh what the hell.

June 27, 2017 – The Charlotte Hornets announced today that guard Malik Monk will miss the Hornets Summer League Training Camp in Charlotte and is doubtful to participate in the team’s games at the Mountain Dew Orlando Pro Summer League with a sprained left ankle suffered during the draft workout process. Monk’s rehab is expected to last two to four weeks and he is expected to be ready to participate in training camp prior to the start of the regular season.
