Actually, that's exactly what it's about as long as there's a salary cap and luxury tax. This isn't the MLB, the Hornets aren't the Yankees, and Michael Jordan isn't George Steinbrenner

If you sit around and dumpster dive for the best bargains, you may be able to brag that your players production/cost ratio is more favorable but you have a team of garbage and fans won't pay to watch those Henderson's and Jodie Meeks of the world.
You have to look for bargains but you also can't eliminate every target for a player requiring a premium.

Re: The Gordon Hayward Thread
Put simpler, if you always refuse to pay a premium then you're never going to get better.
The best players require a premium.
The competition for them is greater, inflating the perceived value, driving up the cost.
At what point do you decide you want to break with fiscal restraint and add a premium asset?
If you keep fishing around for bargains you can be fishing for a looooong time and then at the end of the day walk away with your Gerald Henderson suckerfish.

If you sit around and wait for the best bargains you won't be cash strapped with your hands behind your back when the 'right player' come along to invest that money in

This assumes you're going to get bargains for something/anything more than mediocre players. It's the exception, a total rarity, to get a bargain on a superior talent.
But you keep looking and play Hendo + Meeks while you search.

As a Jazz fan I hope we wait 72 hours because any team that tries to take a player from us deserves to pay for it.

Any cheap owner who tries to screw his face player deserves to pay for it too. Good for Gordon Hayward and just remember, he prefers Charlotte and can opt out in 3 years. Take care of him for us, if you don't mind.

They said on tv that the Jazz were matching, thank god. Now let's fret over whom Cho throws too much money at next!

The Hornets don't have to strike via free-agency this season. They could wait until next season if they don't see anything that's worth the bite. It's already rumored that next season's free-agency is going to be stronger anyway

Actually our owner doesn't make contract negotiations, he lets our GM do the work which is why our franchise hasn't screwed up on handfuls of top 10 picks.

Also we didn't try to screw him, hayward isn't worth a max, but i'm sure his agent knew he could get one so he waited, good on him and his agent.
He doesn't prefer Charlotte if he wanted a max from us he would have to accept it from somewhere else.

I can't think of a sweeter scenario than Lance signing here for more than 10 million.

I can. How about Lance Stephenson signing here for $8.8 million?

That trash talk being said, I think you guys can completely turn around your franchise, I really like the Hornets better then bobcats, the new look and everything is great and you guys picked great this year. Looks like you guys have a bright future ahead of you.

Actually our owner doesn't make contract negotiations, he lets our GM do the work which is why our franchise hasn't screwed up on handfuls of top 10 picks.I love MJ but let's be honest he was a better player then he is an owner.

The fact is, your GM cost your owner millions and Gordon Hayward will opt out in 3 years. Why wouldn't he prefer a playoff team in the East to a bottom feeder in the West? You think he likes losing?
Look I get that you're pissed Cho tried to poach him but don't act like your team is all tough and this whole making Charlotte 'pay' is of any consequence in the grand scheme. Our GM's plan accounts for the 3 day window because he can think ahead. Yours failed to do the same and it cost millions. Watch us still get one of our top targets and you'll know you didn't make us pay for squat.

That statement makes little to no sense.

That gets you what the Pacers have, nothing.

He's implying his agent/Hayward used us to get the max with his true favorite destination the jazz.

Lets hope so. Last year was a great turning point. We just need that one guy from FA (hopefully Lance) to give us a nice boost. Utah could really get a good roster too it seems.
