Re: Motor Keeps Going: The Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Thread III
If we trade MKG for a scorer who isn't also a really good defender (good scorer + mkg level D = all-star level player) then our defense could very well drop to the bottom 1/3 of the league.
Edit: That might not actually matter anymore. Things are getting weird in the league.

I'll say that's a really poorly written piece. If you're going to use stats, maybe go a little deeper than that.

Hornets don't have a beat writer. Blogs, pods, twitter and realgm are all we get. [sigh]

Plenty of RGM posters could provide better content than the standard fluff floating around. But fancy packaging creates the illusion of credibility and unfortunately the primary barrier to entry is eagerness (for free).

Wonder what does it take to get credentialed. I'd put up funds for a website for you guys (Lamar, Mystical Apples, etc.) to go in depth on the Hornets as writer/reporters. Or does a website like that exist? Is QCH on top of their game?
The NBA is only getting more popular, would make sense to have a dedicated Hornets news and analysis reporting website with a twitter handle etc.... With enough effort you can brute force the Observer and its crappy reporting/handling of the Hornets. I wouldn't want to be involved with reporting, analysis or forums, but I'd put up the money for it if you guys are interested.

True, but there is some good content in the blogs/pods and I appreciate the hard work that many of those guys put into their work.

Lamar already writes for At The Hive on a regular basis.

I guess we just need a new, non Observer beat writer.
Does the Observer pay the Hornets for the rights to that role?

Re: Motor Keeps Going: The Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Thread III
How many mistakes were made with the development of MKG?
First the ingenious idea to put him through a 3-4 year Reprogramming process in attempts to change his short form. His shot still isn't much different, he has less confidence now, his coach still has no confidence in him and because of that he's still not being played as much as a #2 pick should, and he hasn't come close to reaching his potential.
Instead of doing what no other coach in the history of pro basketball has ever done (I think) in trying to completely change the shot, I've said here years ago all he needs is more repetition, basically spending hours putting shots up the way he feels comfortable. Lonzo balls shot is ugly, but he practices shooting like that and it works for him, it worked for Marion, and also one of the greatest shooters ever in Reggie Miller...
Another problem is that Cliff is a system coach, so he coaches a system even if the players he has don't fit the system. MKG could've been used inside more, cutting more, setting screens and rolling, instead, he's told to stand in the corner as he watched his teammates play keep away cause he's a offensive liability, but when Lamb, Bellinelli, or anyone on the bench with much less game but a better shot plays, he sees them included in the offense as he sits the pine. He would even watch them close games if they were making jumpers, even though he busts his ass doing what coach and the guys tell him, basically defend like a mad man and don't mess up on offense. That must do wonders for his confidence , especially after being told your shot is so jacked it'll take years for a **** coach to fix it.
MKG is a good overall player, he needs a new start, Cliff will never value MKG as a offensive threat because he's a jump shot guy, MKG is more of a old school scorer type of guy, I would rather MKG get traded where he can really develop and we can get a SF who fits the system. Chandler Parsons, TJ Warren, Kris Middleton, someone of that nature. I think MKG is a great young guy, with alot of potential, this is just a very bad fit for him and the Hornets.

There's decent content but the shoddy fluff more than cancels out the good work. It's really the platform models driving the mehness -- even the good writers are understandably motivated by peer recognition which generally leads to a vanilla product.
You can see the group think in action by comparing narratives from 4-5 national writers with that of your local blogging community a few days later. Or better yet, check who they follow to see the trickle down.

Not sure why MKG's on/off is redlined to Kaminsky here. Without controlling other variables, the primary measurement is MKG v _____ (his replacement).

He is only 23 years old btw.
We've all said that. His role in this league would best be served to develop a shot. For all the talk that he's got a killer work ethic, I'm shocked he hasn't been able to develop more part to his game. At this point MKG is what he is. I know he's only 23 but he's been in the league what, 5 years already?
I blame his high school teams' offensive system. He scored almost all of his points in the paint playing a post position, he had no need for an outside shot and that really set his development back.

That's the point. MKG's more of an indicator of Kaminsky + Zeller succeeding than the two of them are.

Not if identifying relative production is the point. Without a controlled comparison(s), all you're describing is a 2-man rating differential between when the best perimeter defender played vs. the alternative -- a condition that applies to every NBA lineup.
The 109 DRtg doesn't even indicate if it's "good" or "bad" compared similar lineups without MKG.

CHA lineups should almost have an MKG Defensive Reliance Rating (lol MKGDRR). As they should a KWORR.

We can't trade MKG, we need him for the locker room culture. We've got too many thugs like Kaminsky and Zeller that need to be kept in check.
