Re: Not In The Face - The Jeremy Lin Thread 3 + 1
As a Lin fan, I'm not as optimistic as others that Lin will definitely receive a multi-year contract starting at $10M-$11M per with a guaranteed starting spot.
While I do believe it is in Lin's best interest to leave Charlotte because of limited minutes due to MKG return from injury and Clifford penchant for playing Batum/Kemba and possibly MKG huge minutes, I'm still not convinced Lin had the type of year that was needed to guarantee himself a huge pay rise up to $10M+.
My reasoning is from the fact that, statistically, that was Lin's worst year if you look at FG% and 3PTFG%....He was even more streaky jump shooter which was probably because of his new shooting stroke...
On the other hand, Lin produced the most point per minutes of his career...His per36 was at 16.1ppg and that was a career best....Lin basically generated his points by getting to the free throw line..If he had a better FG% and 3PTFG%, Lin could have had an even better year, considering the fact that he got to the FT line at a very high rate per36.
But anyway, I could see teams expecting Lin to take something below $10M...Even the Nets, who may give Lin the chance to start, might not be willing to offer him huge money, specially if they view him as a stop-gap guy until they can get their PG of the future.
Also, the Nets will have leverage on Lin since there won't be many teams that could offer Lin their starting PG role..So Nets could offer Lin the chance to start for a year to prove himself, in exchange for Lin to take maybe $6M-$7M for 1 year.
If it's the case, I still think Lin should take it and have a final crack on proving himself as a starter...If everything goes well, Lin could get an even bigger contract next year for more money as a proven starter.
If Lin can average 15-16ppg and 6-7 assist next year with the Nets, while improving them, I think he would be viewed as a starting caliber PG.
The last time Lin started a full year, he averaged 13.6ppg and 6.1 assist...so it is not farfetch that Lin could average 15-16ppg and maybe 7 assist per...that is all that would be needed as a starter, at the minimum...and I think Lin could hit those stats, specially without a ball-dominant player like Harden hogging the ball and pushing him into the corner.

reminder this thread should not, once again, turn into a thread about Lin playing for the Nets or other teams. If you want to talk about Lin on the Nets, start a thread on the Nets forum.

Re: Not In The Face - The Jeremy Lin Thread 3 + 1
I don't agree that Lin "by all accounts was very happy with the way he was used". From what I gathered, Lin was happy playing in Charlotte this past season because of the coach, the teammates, the low profile lifestyle, and probably the change in his mindset explained in his testimony someone mentioned above, and not necessarily because of how he was used and the minutes he played. I remember in an interview he said he understood the way it went because of injuries and stuff. My interpretation is that he was expecting something different (usage and minutes?) but he understood that circumstances changed because of injuries (as opposed to the Hornets not keeping their promise as some of the fans said).

To be honest, from the way Batum was used, I know Hornets wanted to keep him desperately.
From the way Lin was used, I know Hornets thought him as a rental, especially in G7 against Heat.

Most NBA stats aren't credible. At most times the people who interprets those data are biased, or the data themselves are flawed. Basketball is just too complicated with so many uncontrollable variables.

Apparently this Alex Niu guy (a UCLA grad) is some sort of celebrity/entertainer in Taiwan. He acted as host/translator for a JLin speech and Q&A in the gym of National Taiwan University in Taipei with 2,000 students, I think. Looks like the host/translator wore a vaguely Hornets-colored honeycomb shirt

China Airlines was the one that just happened to carry him on his trip to Asia in the off-season after Linsanity. The flight attendants asked him to autograph the plane's door on that trip. Now he's doing some sort of charity kids event with China Airlines on one of their planes, where apparently JLin is a flight attendant.

Lin said on this trip he is a huge fan of Marvin's. He really value's Marv's friendship on this team. How much that may affect his decision to sign, I don't know. I guess not much, but could.

Okay, you know how throughout the season you had Lin fans flying into Charlotte from other cities and countries for sports tourism? The reverse just happened.
A bunch of fans from Charlotte traveled to Taiwan. They shout around the 2:15 mark that they're from Charlotte. Buzz City.

That sort of fan intensity and dedication has been demonstrated from some elements of Lin's fan base in the past. Interesting to see the same thing happen in reverse. Does this happen often? Charlotte fans traveling to foreign countries to see the international Hornets players in the off-season? Haven't heard of any Hornets traveling to France to see Batum yet, but maybe that news just didn't hit my radar. Do Hornets fans have a tradition of doing this type of thing in the off-season? Or are they only doing it for Jeremy?
Leaving Taiwan:

Story of someone whose life was changed by inspiration from Linsanity.
http://nextshark.com/terry-fan-poker-wsop-interview/
Terry Fan: How He Went From Poor and Overweight to a Poker Stud
-------
In 2005, Terry Fan was fatefully introduced to poker by a college dormmate and began playing recreationally. After discovering that he could play online, he took his mother’s credit card and deposited $100. In a stroke of luck, he finished 4th in a major online tournament and made $14,000. That was the start of Fan’s poker career.
Within less than a year, Fan was already using his poker winnings to fund his college tuition and eventually turned pro in 2009.
-------
“When I found early success in poker, I thought I could easily make money with just a few button clicks. It didn’t last for more than three years and then reality hit me in the face. I started to realize the competition got a lot tougher due to the existence of a lot of online poker training sites. At the time I still blamed my failure on bad luck. I complained, felt jealous of other people’s success and had an ego.”
By 2012, the long hours of sitting down at a computer and constantly eating unhealthy foods had taken a toll on his body. Fan was overweight at 231 pounds and struggling financially. He planned to quit poker by 2012 and get a job when something happened that lit a fire from under him:
“When Jeremy Lin’s story stormed the NBA and Taiwan scene, his success inspired me. I was literally in tears when I first saw his breakthrough game. I was thinking in the back of my mind, ‘If he can do it in NBA where it’s predominantly black and white people, I can also do it in the poker world where your skin color or height isn’t much of a factor to your success.’”
--------
“The Le brothers helped me a lot during my two month “transformation camp” at their house. I dropped 25 lbs using the Bulletproof diet during that time, honed my poker skills and learned how to be a better person.”
After hours of practice and studying to sharpen his poker skills, Fan finished 4th in a California Mega Million tournament for $40,000 two months later. A week later, Fan had a breakthrough tournament and won the coveted Macau Poker Cup main event and raked in $228,000.
“It’s almost unbelievable how changing your mindset and lifestyle can have such a tremendous impact on so many other things.”
Fan, now 33, has completely turned his life around. He maintains a very healthy lifestyle, works out almost everyday and weighs 174 lbs, having shed a total of 57 lbs. Last year, he was named Asia Player of the Year by the World Series of Poker.
-------
Terry is currently in Las Vegas competing in the annual World Series of Poker Events and aspires to win the coveted main event. He resides in Tapei, Taiwan.

Ah, if that's the case, then it would make sense. That wasn't clear from the video.

What's this about a rehab? Is his body still recuperating from the grind of the season? I guess he did take a lot of hard hits for the Hornets.

I suppose that ties somewhat into JLin's recent partnership with that English-learning app he endorsed this year to reform the school and education system in China using mobile platforms and technologies. I wouldn't gloat too much about Lin being invited to this World Economic forum as some proudfull accomplishment to parade over other NBA players....Some of these guys were responsible for the Wall Street crash and economic crisis and I doubt they care too much about the average Americans.
I would rather Lin not attend this forum and find time for other meaningful stuff to do...Go work on your jump shot or something.
