Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
Looking at Monk's stats and they are almost identical to last years. I thought for sure he'd show some progress, but it appears it's going to take more time. His defense is really concerning and I'd be down to trade him if the right offer came along. We are a playoff team and Monk just doesn't appear like he'll be a positive addition this season.
The Charlotte Hornets will win their first round series against the Boston Celtics in the 2021 Playoffs

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
I see this year as a rookie year for him after how he was used last year.

I don't understand this perspective.
What do you mean "how he was used last year"?
How was he used last year?
He missed the summer with an injury.
He obviously wasn't ready for any sort of responsibility/extended PT.
You could argue he is not ready for the responsibility/extended PT he is getting this year.

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
I don't want to rehash the entire "should we/shouldn't we play Monk" saga from last year, but I'll just say he gets a little extra slack from me since this is his first stint actually being treated like a useful contributor with consistent minutes. Even after a full year he's still seeing situations (like closing out games) for the first time, and feeling them out.
My beef with Cliff not playing him was less that he was 'ready' and more that MCW totally sucked. If MCW were actually decent I'd understand, but he is a trash player and even if Monk was out there screwing around it would be a wash with the upside he might improve with experience.

If it makes you feel any better, Mitchell's shooting splits are almost as bad (41/30/83) and he just had a game with 35 shots (13 made) and 0 assists.

Monk's shot just needs to fall, it would cure all his ills.

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
i'm more concerned about his ability to get to the rim over anything else
there have a been a few scenarios this year were kemba would bring the ball up waiting to get doubled high - and we'd expect it. the ball moves to monk and its essentially 4 on 3 in our advantage. What does he do?
absolutely nothing. i don't know if he's thinking too much or what but he's gotta make something out of that. also, his shot would probably start falling if he got to the line to build a rhythm but he only likes to go up strong when its a highlight. any other drive at the rim is either an ugly floater or free food for help defenders.

7-for-45 last 5 games; 2-for-25 from 3... so much for 2nd year improvement. bacon time.

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
So Monk just had a great game and lit up from 3. It's like fans feel shocked when a 20 year old scorer is inconsistent. When Kemba was 20 he was just starting his Junior year at UConn. But oh yeah, Monk is junk.

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
It's not just that his shooting is inconsistent, it's that his shooting is really where all of his value is. Kemba could always handle the ball and bring intensity and was effective on D (most of the time). If Monk is not hitting, he really doesn't add anything and we're better off with someone else on the floor.
