If we still want to make the playoffs, then I completely agree with Doris's take that we aren't actually committed to winning. There is no excuse to let Kemba go but keep the strategy of trying to make the playoffs.

The real question is are they expecting playoffs and are they building a roster for playoffs this year while giving up something better in future years. The coach, the players, leadership will all tell us they are trying to make the playoffs. It's what every single team in the NBA should say. But will they be able to with the players they have on the court? Hell no. And reading between the lines, Mitch has continued to stress player development. That's another way of referencing a rebuild in my opinion.

Regardless of how competitive we will be this year, and regardless of how much I love Kemba and would have been fine with it if we paid him...

Giving a 32-33 year old 6 ft PG who relies on quickness and already has had multiple knee surgeries $35-40 mil a year is probably not the best thing for a franchises long-term health... especially if they are barely competing for a playoff spot

We've mismanaged our team enough, I'm fine actually being a bit pragmatic for once

I agree completely. It is not realistic to expect the GM who has to sell tickets to the games next year to come out and say we are trying to tank out for a year or two but please buy these $100 lower level seats to the slaughter! It's probably also not a good idea to just come out and say to our players that we are taking the season off before training camp even starts. Kupchak HAS to maintain the idea (i.e. fiction) that everybody is giving their best efforts to win as we chart a new direction and develop the young guys. We don't want to encourage a culture on the team that promotes not even trying.
We will likely be pretty bad but I hope that at least they try hard, run the floor with pace, dunk a lot and get the newbs some real NBA minutes. Play D and be gritty. Win 25-30 games max, but not humiliate themselves in the process. Get 2 good high lottery picks and be ready to win big in 3 years.

I want the new modus operandi (MO) of the team to be equal parts physicality mixed with skill. I think Rozier, Bacon, Bridges, Washington, and Martin all fit this MO. I hope Mitch keeps it going with future free agent transactions, trades, and the draft.

Absolutely, we have been a finesse team for years with the exception of Dwight. One guy can't do it for the whole team either, we need to be across the board tougher, stronger and longer.

There are encouraging signs that the team feels the same way. They have Monk hitting the weight room for example. If he adds more strength and plays a bit more physical on defense (and offense to draw fouls) it could be the difference between having a great career in the NBA or washing out in a few years.

If the team keeps prioritizing two way players that are physical and decently skilled it will make figuring out who the team is likely to sign, trade for, or draft a lot easier.

Q. Will Marvin Williams be traded before the start of the season?

A. I believe the player most likely to be traded between now and training camp is Williams. That doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, but it’s the logical move because of the three veterans on expiring contracts — Williams, Bismack Biyombo and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist — Williams would be the most attractive to other teams. He has a reasonable salary at $14 million for a player who, when healthy, would be in any rotation in the NBA.

I heard multiple times during summer league that the Hornets have definitely made Williams available. That makes sense, in that coach James Borrego has said he’s considering starting Miles Bridges at power forward. Also, the Hornets’ first-round pick, Kentucky’s PJ Washington, would be a power forward at least initially. He might also play some center eventually.

I wouldn’t expect a team would give up more than a second-round pick for Williams. As context, remember the Hornets got Courtney Lee and Lamb for second-rounders.

Lol, we are finally going to utilize Batum to his strengths? Moving Kemba and Marvin should do it.
The Charlotte Hornets will win their first round series against the Boston Celtics in the 2021 Playoffs

I feel like even if Batum were the clear cut only scoring option out there he would still be passive and disappear during games. How many times last season was he on minute 26 in the 4th with zero points. It’s remarkable.

With Morris contemplating about backing out on the Spurs, wonder if they would kick the tires on Marvin?

If the plan is to move Marvin in order to prioritize Miles + PJ then the team can also afford to move MKG if they package MKG + Marvin for a center. Acquiring a center allows them to slide Cody to backup C and third string PF behind Miles + PJ. Also Hernangomez can play some PF in a pinch.

PF just seems to be the position with the biggest glut of players. The Hornets also still have the MLE.

I would do Patty Mills for Marv in a nanosecond.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

Didn't the FO try and either sign outright or trade for Mills 5 or 6 years ago?

Looking at the Spurs cap situation... guessing the Spurs were giving Morris 2 years of the MLE for a total of about $19M, since I don't see a clear path to them having space.

So this kinda makes sense. Marvin makes about what the Knicks are offering Morris, but the Spurs can't offer anything aside from more years. Marvin for Mills works salary-wise and we should be able to extract another asset for taking on the extra year.

Patty is younger and saves the Hornets $3 mil this upcoming season even if there is an extra year. If I were the Spurs I wouldn't attach an asset.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

Nobody’s coming to the rescue. If there was a significant deal to be made it would have been triggered already. Once the dominos fell relative to the big free agents, teams that were gapped made some moves. Heck even Toronto has moved on by signing a free agent. Nobody wants our trash.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.
