Enjoy that frigging ride!!
I thought of this post today....
You wouldn't happen to have been through "that ride" yourself and have some advice for me would you? I'm a bit over-whelmed with how to get my new wife a work permit and get back into the States. All the lawyers I talk to want $300 to answer my questions....
I went through the immigration thing to be here in Canada. Took about 2 years from the time I submitted my application to it was approved - and that doesn't take into consideration the amount of time to actually complete the application preparing it for submission which was months. The whole thing probably ended up costing us something around $3,000 once you pay for application fees, criminal back ground checks, medical's, photo's etc.
We did a thing called "spousal sponsorship" - meaning my then girlfriend, now wife, basically vouched for me. In order to qualify we had to "prove" our relationship, it's validity and it's length. Our submission was about 3 inches thick. It was an exhausting, frustrating and complex process, mainly because so many people we phoned who worked at immigration gave so many conflicting answers. Luckily I found a loop hole that allowed me to reside here during the time, so we were never apart through out the process. I couldn't leave the country, but I could stay and could work. It's called "implied status" meaning that while I didn't have a valid visa (the two I had expired because it takes so long) it was just a matter of time before I was granted residency as I had made my submission and was just waiting for it to be rubber stamped.
With all that said, try not to let it get you down. I know that it is daunting and seems impossible, but it's not. Just take your time and I know it sounds crazy, but stay positive. All the bother will be worth it in the end. It just takes time............and money!! Make sure everything you submit is correct because if they start to process your application and find something wrong, they send it back to you and you basically go to the back of the line again.
Like I said, it is worth it. I have my residency now and can apply for Canadian citizenship in about 2 years if I wanted to. Both our kids now have duel Australian and Canadian citizenship - which is ace for them.
Hang in there mate. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!!
