Re: The Gordon Hayward Thread
I was surprised to see most of the Jazz board (66% according to a poll there) don't want them to match.

If they were NOT going to match and came up front and said that right now, it would cause fan backlash and look like they didn't even struggle with the decision and didn't even debate keeping Hayward.
IMO, more likely the only way they would make their intentions clear immediately is if they were going to match him.
But if they were not going to match him, we wouldn't know up front. They would drag it out.
So we don't know.
I would think if they were definitely matching him they would have done so. Teams aren't especially afraid to be froze out.
Lol. They match him. That's all. Move from him ok? You might be only 5 people who don't agree this.

Woj said they will match, that is good enough for me.

He's very mediocre and he went through a bad spell last season where he shot very poorly from the field. That contract we offered is insane but Cliff likes him. I don't know why we didnt just go after Parsons to be honest.

Lwcasu wrote:The Jazz could be bluffing. If they were super high on Gordon, then I think they would have instantly matched. They gain nothing by waiting if they have already made their decision, except the satisfaction of torturing Cho. My gut tells me they are actually debating this.
The problem with the concept of this guy being part of their core, is they don't have a core yet. Their closest guy is Favors and at this point he is a quality starter in this league with potential. They have Dante Exum who hasn't played a game in the NBA. They have Kanter, who was inconsistent, while not a force on defense and they have the Burk(e)s.
The problem with their core is they don't have an all-star on that squad. Yes, sure they have "potential", but this is a very risky move from their position. If they don't have some strong development, then their ceiling may be the 9-10th seed in the west.
I'll call bluff, but acknowledge I could be wrong.
The more I think about this, I've decided it's not likely...
The reason is if they were bluffing or battling internally on the match, they would have maybe leaked some effort to salvage some value via sign and trade but it seems they were never interested in sign + trade. I'll acknowledge Cho didn't contact them about a sign + trade before Hayward's visitation period. After the offer sheet I think Cho did contact the Jazz because Clifford said he feels they did everything they can do to get Hayward. This is code. This leads me to believe they attempted both the sign + trade route before the submission of the offer sheet to the Jazz and the no-match route by adding the trade kicker to a max deal. I believe Cho was shot down immediately on a sign + trade but we never heard about it.
I just at this point believe, even though it leaked Cho didn't contact them prior to visitation on a sign + trade, that the Hornets explored every possible avenue including sign + trade. So the Jazz are not bluffing nor battling internally to weigh their decision. They made up their minds at the beginning they would keep him unless an attractive sign and trade proposal came along. We don't match up with them.

Damn, did we not have him sign it quickly? That seems crazy!

Finally, we can make other moves. I hope we don't give a similar offer to Lance! 13m should be the max for him!

I doubt Lance Stephenson even want to come here now after such a lack of initial interest unless we throw the bank at him, in which a doubly doubt

Eh there were articles saying that Lance's camp was waiting for Jazz to match Hayward, in hopes to get overpaid by us.
