Re: Offseason Thread
Thankfully the draft comes before free agency, we don't need to pay PJ an exorbitant amount if we get Wemby or Miller.

Re: Offseason Thread
If Maxey is getting an early max extension you better believe LaMelo is getting one too. It's going to be a very expensive off-season for the team, probably why MJ is trying to sell.

Re: Offseason Thread
I was thinking more of if we get VW then maybe we don't pay for pj. If we get Miller then maybe we don't need to pay for miles or Kelly. And if we get scoot then we probably won't pay for dsj. We know those three players should immediately walk straight into the starting lineup. Any other draftees I doubt will move our free agency plans a whole lot.amcoolio wrote:Thankfully the draft comes before free agency, we don't need to pay PJ an exorbitant amount if we get Wemby or Miller.

Re: Offseason Thread
Scoot hasn't spend enough time in the G-League yet.
But seriously, I doubt Cliff would start either Scoot or Miller. Wemby would be the only starter, and a lot of that will be because if he doesn't start Cliff will probably get canned.
Scoot or Miller (or any draftee in our range besides Wemby) would mean Rozier or Gordon get benched. Neither of which will happen.

Re: Offseason Thread
If we bring back Oubre, our top 5 SF/SG would probably be behind him on the depth chart too.
A huge part of our offseason should be clearing out excess wings.

Re: Offseason Thread
The most interesting thing is how this impacts Miles.
Will he be back? He should be a starter, but that would either mean Gordon gets benched or PJ doesn't return so Miles can be PF. Would Cliff even play him as a PF?
We desperately need to trade Rozier, Gordon, sign&trade PJ or do something to clear some playing time for whoever we pick. This isn't even considering our other draft picks. Martin coming back too.

Gordon would probably accept coming off the bench. A swiss army knife sixth man is probably what his role will be on his next team.

Re: Offseason Thread
Current SF/SG Depth, assuming Miles is back and our top pick. Also assuming we actually want to keep Oubre.
Rozier - Oubre - Top 5 - Bouk - Bryce
Gordon - Miles- Svi - Martin
PF isn't much better. Have like... potentially 4 guys there. PJ/Wemby(dream) and Thor deserves some time. Plus whatever we play on with Kai.
Now you add a couple other draft picks (at least Denver + our 2nd).
The only clear positions are PG and C.
Melo - DSJ (assume we keep him)
Mark - Nick
Everything else is a logjam or easily could be.
Rozier - Oubre - Top 5 - Bouk - Bryce
Gordon - Miles- Svi - Martin

It's not if he would accept it, it's would Cliff actually do it. I can't see a world where Cliff benches Gordon or Rozier, they're probably his favorite players on the team along with Oubre.

He shouldn't have a choice. Gordon is getting up there in age. Coming off the bench increases the odds he'll stay healthy all season. And we're likely to have a relatively young bench, his play style will be a huge help for them.
And we should also remove the Oubre decision by not bringing him back. Clifford would definitely play him over Brandon Miller, a competent organization would not allow that to happen. The front office removed the choice when they traded Plumlee, not bringing a guy back is a lot easier than that.

Re: Offseason Thread
Hopefully we get a new owner asap and they just remove Cliff so we don't have to drum up creative ways to juggle the roster to prevent him from doing stupid **** with the lineups. That seems the most straightforward solution to a lot of these issues.

Re: Offseason Thread
According to NYG on the TnT forum, we have -4 million in cap space with the PJ/Miles holds being 32 million. Hopefully that means we don't bring back Oubre.
Paying 60 million in cap to Hayward/Rozier, and honestly if you remove them from the team we are a better team so those are pointless contracts. Addition by subtraction. Mitch/Hopfully new GM has a hole to get out of.

I have the real life version going something like this...
1. Charlotte drafts BPA's
2. Charlotte re-signs Miles Bridges and PJ Washington
3. Charlotte uses the MLE on a Vet C/PF type?
That's the opening night roster more or less.

Re: Offseason Thread
The real question in my mind is did any of our rookie scale contract players earn rotation spots for next year? Or are they 3rd string depth?
McGowens? not even close
Thor? maybe as a defensive stopper he is backup, but still feels like 3rd string to me.
Kai? pretty obvious he is 3rd string center next year.
Maledon? 3rd string pg at best
Bouknight? 3rd string at best
Step 1 is either trading Rozier or letting Oubre walk. I think we need to keep 1, but keeping both doesn't make sense. We have the roster spots to resign everyone and still have control over the rookies we select including Svi, Bridges, PJ, Theo etc... In the example below it looks like it would be a lot to pay both PJ and Miles if one is a backup, but honestly we would only be paying close to 20-25 million total for all of our PGs and Centers. All of our money is going to likely be spent on wings/forwards and we are better off spending money and figuring the rest out in trades later, trying to live as an under the cap team in anyway is a losing strategy. A potential second unit of DSJ- Martin-Gordon-PJ and Richards is pretty hawt.
PG(1) LaMelo Ball - (2) Dennis Smith Jr - (3) Theo Maledon
SG (1) Rozier/Oubre (2) Cody Martin (3) James Bouknight
SF(1) Brandon Miller (2) Gordon Hayward (3) Bryce McGowens
PF (1) Miles Bridges (2) PJ Washington (3) JT Thor
C (1) Mark Williams - (2) Nick Richards - (3) Kai Jones
Leaves 2 more roster spots
(1) Denver pick
(2) Svi
Leaves 3 two way spots
(1) Our own 2nd
(2) Jazz 2nd
(3) Last 2nd we own

Re: Offseason Thread
That's a good analysis. I frankly don't see the Hornets keeping Smith or Maledon. Fans like them, but the franchise needs shooting and more shooting. I also don't anticipate Charlotte signing PJ to come off the bench. The starting lineup will include (choke) Miles at the 3 and PJ at the 4. The Hornets are destined for Scoot Henderson and he'll be the 2 beside Ball with Williams at the 5. The Hornets will have to swallow hard and deal Rozier, I think. It's for the best, really.

They should have fired Clifford yesterday.
