Most of my back/hip pain is a result of carrying heavy stuff for long distances in not very fun circumstances.

I have basically eliminated most of that by stretching and/or foam rolling.

Start doing yoga and work on your flexibility. You'll be surprised how much better you'll feel.

my wife had to have a disc shaved to fix it. nothing else helped her, the disc was pressing on the sciatic nerve, nothing could fix it.

I've been doing yoga for a while and it's really helped my back. If you have sciatica though you need an experienced teacher. I suggest you specificlaly try Iyengar Yoga because of its focus on alignment. Quick search in Charlotte led me to this place and teacher http://iyengaryogacharlotte.com/yoga-blog/team/tami-robinson-c-iayt/ who studied with Aadil Palkhivala, with whom my yoga teacher in Asheville also studied. Teachers trained in this tradition are skilled at adapting the poses for students with physical limitations (sciatica for example) and are known for making hands on adjustments. Good luck hope you find a solution!

It's the worst! I've been dealing with a ton of chronic pain over the past year mostly in my hands and my feet as a result of compressed nerves still from an unknown source. But that pain has nothing on the low back sciatica pain that has wrecked me over the past two weeks. Sitting hurts standing hurts laying on my back hurts laying on my stomach hurts only relief is laying on my side which I can only do for so long due to the nerve issues I already have in my arms. Went to the chiropractor today and going tomorrow. I was already working with her on a lot of my other issues so hopefully that'll help.

Thanks for the yoga link. I'll check it out. I guess I've been a little reluctant to go down the yoga route over this past year because with all the problems I had in my hands and thumb I have a hard time doing a lot of traditional standard yoga poses.

Anyone had any success with acupuncture? My neurologist had recently recommended trying that but I have not yet done it.

Anyone ever use Tramadol? And if so what was your experience like. Seems like it's the pain relief drug that's the closest to an opioid without actually being an opioid. Although many of the reviews I've read make the side effects seem awful for some. I've really been trying to avoid Pharmaceuticals as much as possible.

Sachmo, what all did your wife try before she finally relented and gave into surgery? How long was she in pain?

Not nearly the same, but I injured my spine during martial arts training back in my late 20s. At the time I was aware of research indicating that most people lost 80-90% of the strength in supporting muscles when this happens (you tend to move to avoid pain so support just doesn't get used day to day - which in turn makes re injury odds much higher). So I rehabbed by slowly strengthening my back muscles. Took a few years to get back to 100% but everything was good for about a decade after that ... then I re-injured it changing a tire of all things. Was in pain for about another decade after that, but it was manageable. Recently had relief by losing weight (50 pounds) while working on regaining core strength again.

Yoga isn't a bad bet, but it works best on pain generated by things like muscles being too tight or lack of hamstring flexibility. It helped me a little but not a ton. It did feel good though. I avoided acupuncture mostly due to skepticism. I've avoided drugs because I felt like the pain I was in wasn't worth the risk of getting hooked and having to take them long term. It's pain calculus though. If my pain had been greater good odds that I would have gone down that road or considered surgery.

random question: often now when I get on Real GM page bogs down "waiting for cache" to the point of hanging up the browser, seems to gotten much worse last month or two - any settings I can change anything I can turn off on the site to make it better?

Not on the full website, but lately my phone has been sending me device health updates about the app running and using a lot of battery even when I haven't been on in hours.

The ads have gotten really aggressive on the site. I've been having them steal priority when I'm trying to type a ton. Also seeing a lot more pop-ups and scripts getting blocked lately.

Same for me. Half the time I'm on mobile, some ad pops up and takes browser priority. Soooooo **** annoying

uBlock Origin is your friend.

The ads on this site have been cancer for a long time. I've completely stopped coming here on mobile.
