Sorensen: Hornets’ decision to pass on Duke’s Justise Winslow for Wisconsin’s Frank Kaminsky puzzling

I ripped general manager Rich Cho in a column Thursday. But if Winslow fell to Charlotte, nobody could rip this pick. And he did fall. The Pistons inexplicably decided to take Stanley Johnson.

So go to the bench, Nicolas Batum. The Hornets have their man.

I left the press room at Time Warner Cable Arena to feel the excitement from fans. Oh, were fans excited. They tittered like kids. Commissioner Adam Silver walked to the lectern and announced that with the ninth pick the Hornets selected – Wisconsin’s Frank Kaminsky.

Thus did the excitement end. Fans were shocked and sad and really angry.

*****

I don’t know who made this pick. But it is evident the Hornets are hung up on tall men from the Big Ten.

*****

Draft night is supposed to be exhilarating and exciting.

Until the Hornets made their pick it was.

Been emailing Sorenson tonight. He's a really good guy.

I'm prepared to eat crow

but I think that Frank, Hawes, Lamb, and Batum are really gonna help Cliff and MKG/Kemba in particular. From a basketball standpoint, all those guys address issues that this team has had.

Kaminsky said on the NBA Summer League commercial that he needs to get stronger and quicker.

Batum was the best wing he could get for his crappy, worthless picks/assets.

And with a wing duo (MKG + Batum) that doesn't work, instead of challenge that pairing, he picks Kaminsky. There needed to be a Booker in there to pressure his roster construction.

We go into the season with Hairston as our immediate backup SG/SF? Lol. I thought Cho could possibly cave to Clifford and get Booker with Stanley off the board. I definitely didn't want Winslow but wouldn't have been mad. They're just mad because we passed on the Dukie.

I hate Duke and I think this pick is a joke. We needed a backup SF, insurance against losing Batum, and overall talent, far more than we needed another Spencer Hawes. Winslow was by far BPA and he fills a need and fits perfect with our second unit.

I better not be the only one booing the hell out of this man next year. I'm going to buy close seats just so he can hear me.

With the exception of Batum and occasionally Lamb none of those guys play NBA level defense. I know defense isn't our problem, but if we lose Biz on top of all the other changes we've made it quickly will be. At least we should finally be able to hit some 3 pointers, I don't even think Clifford can screw that up with the amount of shooters we added to the roster.

Maybe we get lucky and he celebrates getting drafted by snorting too much coke.

We play Al Jefferson. We played Gary Neal and Mo Williams. We played Marvin Williams and Maxiel.

We had an above average defense in a cluter**** of a season still. Hawes isn't worse than Al. Frank actually did a decent job against 4 guys in the top 10 inside. I'm really not worried about defense. Unless we lose Biz and Zeller at the same time somehow.

Terrible pick, I don't care how good he is. He's a POS. He's notorious for being a POS. I thought we went after high character guys, not suburban Chicago punk brats who trash our team when we're down. I seriously will boo him every time he touches the ball until he's off the team. What is Rich Cho thinking?

Posted this in the other thread but Kaminsky had a DTrg of 92.6 last year which is actually pretty good. Winslow's was 92.8

I'll step off the cliff if we resign Biyombo. I just don't like bigs who can't play D. I hope to be pleasantly surprised by Kaminsky in that department, he certainly has the complete offensive package though that's for sure.
